In brief

In the past few years Peugeot's styling has become more and more challenging on the eye with overgrown grilles and odd proportions. With that in mind the French car maker is hitting the reset button with its new family sedan, the 508.

Based on the lovely SR1 and 5 by Peugeot concept cars from the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the 508 is set to replace both the 407 and 607 sedans, the latter of which is no longer on sale in Australia.

The base model Active comes equipped with a cruise control and a speed limiter, self-dimming rear-view mirror, rear-parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, LED tail-lights, part-leather trim and dusk-sensing headlights.

Step up to the mid-range Allure and you'll also score keyless entry and start, sun blinds at the rear, an electric parking brake, electric folding wing mirrors, full leather trim, four-zone climate control, electric front seats and front parking sensors. In the range-topping GT you'll also find a colour head-up display, 18-inch alloy wheels and bi-xenon headlights that swivel with your steering input.

All 508s also come with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, emergency brake assist, stability control, and electric windows and mirrors. An eight-speaker sound system is standard across the entire Australia-bound 508 range and features Bluetooth, USB and steering wheel audio controls; sat nav is optional on all models.

Pricing and availability

The 508 sedan comes in all three trim levels listed above, with the Active starting at AU$36,990, the Allure listed at AU$39,490 and the GT rounding things out at AU$52,990. A wagon is available in mid-range Allure trim from AU$42,490.

Two turbo-diesel engines are available now: a 120kW/340Nm 2-litre and a 150kW/450Nm 2.2-litre. Coming later this year is a 82kW/270Nm 1.6-litre turbo-diesel and a 115kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol.

All prices include GST, but exclude dealer and statutory charges.
