Speaking with The Telegraph, Will.i.am said that the new accessory, aptly named i.am+, will act as a dock for the iPhone 4 or 5, adding another sensor and flash unit to the existing camera module.

Will.i.am said that the accessory will "turn your smartphone into a genius phone", but apart from that description filled with hyperbole, there's very little detail describing the actual functionality of the i.am+.

This is not the first time that the Black Eyed Peas singer has dipped his toes into the world of tech innovation. Will.i.am has long been an advocate for BlackBerry, and has helped engineer a creative collaboration tool called Dipdive for the platform.

It seems somewhat curious, given the singer's previous association and close ties with BlackBerry, that he would jump ship to develop an accessory for iPhone users.

The i.am+ camera accessory will be the first of several devices that the singer will launch under the i.am brand. More details on the camera will be revealed at its official launch later this week.
