Where can you watch The Hobbit in 48fps?

Here are the cinemas in Australia that will be showing Peter Jackson's The Hobbit in its true 3D 48 frames-per-second format.

Which cinemas in Australia will be showing Peter Jackson's The Hobbit in its true 3D 48 frames-per-second format?

It's pretty common knowledge that Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was shot in 48fps — what Warner Bros is marketing as HFR 3D, or high frame rate 3D — and he wants it to be shown in that format.

It's not been to everyone's taste. At 48fps, it has double the frame rate of normal films and its causing a "soap opera effect" for some viewers. In its preview, Variety said that "human actors seemed over-lit and amplified in a way that many compared to ... daytime television".

But director Jackson has been a staunch defender of his choice, taking to Facebook last year to say:

Looking at 24 frames every second may seem OK — and we've all seen thousands of films like this over the last 90 years — but there is often quite a lot of blur in each frame during fast movements, and if the camera is moving around quickly, the image can judder or "strobe". Shooting and projecting at 48fps does a lot to get rid of these issues. It looks much more lifelike, and it is much easier to watch, especially in 3D.

Either way, not all Australian cinemas will be showing The Hobbit in HFR 3D, simply because many haven't moved over to the digital technology that makes it possible. IMAX Sydney has been quite open that it will be showing it in 3D at 24fps, to the disappointment of some viewers.

So, for all the 48fps purists out there, here's a list of the cinemas we've found that have guaranteed HFR sessions. If you've heard of any not on the list, let us know and we'll update. Remember, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on Boxing Day, 26 December.
