Not allowing humanity to fall vulnerable to a Death Star, a new Kickstarter has sprung up to provide us with a defence against it: the dogfighter that took down the original Death Star.

The Death Star project on Kickstarter is gathering momentum. Already, it's at over 10 per cent of its goal — £226,128 of £20,000,000 (AU$346,203.10 of AU$30,620,100.47) at the time of writing.

What if it gets funded? Simon Kwan of LGCL Designs believes that it's all part of a cunning plot on the part of the Empire. And someone needs to stand up and fight.

There's probably more of a chance here — the budget is much more conservative, at US$11,000,000 (AU$10,658,202.17).

As the Kickstarter stated, "If George Lucas produced Star Wars IV: A New Hope for $11,000,000, we figure we can finance a prototype of an X-Wing and train a pilot."

As a stretch goal, the team is aiming for US$4,485,672,683 — the global box office total for all Star Wars films; and if the project manages to bring in 13 million Galactic Standard Credits, then we may even see "a Class YT-1300 Freighter (heavily modified) and a crew consisting of a Corellian smuggler and a Wookie co-pilot" (that's the Millennium Falcon, just so you know).

Or maybe we won't see any of it; like the Kickstarter that inspired it, it's just meant to be a bit of fun, and will be pulled from the site if it looks like it might actually get funded.

But still ... we can dream.

You can find the project here.
