Telstra unveils six Next G mobile phones

Coinciding with Telstra's launch of NEXT G, an HSPDA-enabled 3G network in Australia that operates in the 850MHz space, is the release of six new mobile handsets

Coinciding with Telstra's launch of Next G, an HSPDA-enabled 3G network in Australia that operates in the 850MHz space, is the release of the i-mate JASJAM, Motorola RAZR MAXX V6 , Samsung A701, Samsung A501, LG TU500 and the self-branded Telstra F850.

At the top of the line is the i-mate JASJAM, a Windows Mobile PDA-phone with slide-out QWERTY keyboard, jogdial, 2-megapixel camera, 802.11g Wi-Fi and a 7cm (2.8-inch) screen with 64K colours. It is HSDPA-enabled, supports quadband connectivity, Bluetooth and has infrared. A range of Microsoft mobile applications are pre-installed (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, etc) run by a 400MHz Samsung CPU, 128MB of RAM, 64MB of ROM and a microSD card slot for further expansion.

LG's TU500 sports a 1.3 megapixel swivel camera that you can also use for videos, an MP3 player, a 262K colour display and Bluetooth.

Samsung's A501 is quite similar, with a 1.3-megapixel camera that doubles as a low-res camcorder, MP3 player and Bluetooth connectivity, but unlike the LG it comes in pink or blue models, both with silver accents.

From what we've seen, the Samsung A701 flip phone looks like a souped up Z510 . It has a slim 17.3mm profile, supports stereo Bluetooth, has a 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and 24MB of internal memory.

At this stage we're unsure of who is manufacturing the Telstra F850, but it seems to be a basic flip phone with 1.3-megapixel camera and MP3 player with 64MB of internal memory.

The snazziest of the bunch would have to be the 2-megapixel Motorola RAZR MAXX V6, which we first heard about a couple of months ago. It has the Bluetooth A2DP profile onboard so you can stream music wirelessly to stereo headphones or speakers.

We're expecting the review handsets to start arriving at CNET.com.au next week so stay tuned for loads of HSPDA-fuelled reviews.

Telstra's Next G Web site has more information on recommended handsets for different types of users in the meantime.
