The Shazam app now gathers related content for TV shows on over 160 channels ... in the US.
Shazam is best known for its music tagging, identifying songs, finding lyrics and more. A lesser known feature is its TV tagging, which now works across more than 160 US TV channels, identifying TV shows at any time slot.
Tagging a show will bring up cast information, photos, trivia, any social networking buzz that's associated with the show and more. If you're tagging a sporting event, you can get scores and statistics.
In a press statement, Doug Garland, chief revenue officer for Shazam, said:
"Over the last year, Shazam has been testing and learning what works by building dozens of custom interactive second-screen experiences for select television shows and events [...] We've applied what we've learned to our newly expanded service, and will continue to work closely with our network partners and show producers to build special, unique second-screen experiences for their tent-pole television events and many of the most popular shows on TV."
Speaking more candidly with Gigaom, Garland stated that the company would continue to pursue a "second screen" strategy in its app implementation, saying that interactive TV had turned out to have "been the road-kill of the information superhighway".
We contacted Shazam regarding whether similar TV functionality may expand out of the US and into Australia. A Shazam spokesperson responded:
Shazam has launched Shazam-enabled advertisements in Australia with brands like Cornetto. We will continue to grow the advertising service there and in New Zealand as we roll out Shazam for TV programming globally.
