LG and Sony Ericsson have both committed to upgrading a selection of smartphones to the new Android OS 4.0, better known as Ice Cream Sandwich, but only Sony Ericsson is claiming March for the delivery of its new firmware to customers.

LG confirmed via its Facebook page today that it will be deploying the latest version of Android to select Optimus phones. Included in the upgrade will be the Optimus 2X , the Optimus Black , the Optimus 3D and the US-only Optimus LTE.

LG is also examining Ice Cream Sandwich to see which of its other smartphones can run the new OS in an effort to upgrade as many users as possible, although it didn't confirm any timelines for the upgrades. The company will post more information on its Facebook page and local websites next month, with the upgrade schedule and the names of other model smartphones that will be able to handle Android 4.0.

Sony Ericsson went a step further, with the company's Italian head of marketing also taking to Facebook to let its fans know that the company hopes to have its entire 2011 range updated by March. Sony Ericsson has already promised to update the Xperia Arc , the Xperia Arc S , the Xperia Ray , the Xperia Play and the Xperia Neo .

Rival manufacturer HTC indicated its intention to upgrade some of this year's handsets a few weeks ago, giving "early 2012" as its best estimation of when the update might be made available.
