How great would an animated film of Dark Horse's The Goon be? Its creators have taken to Kickstarter to try to get it off the ground.

Eric Powell's multi-Eisner-winning The Goon has an animated tie-in film that he's been trying to get off the ground for a few years now, and it's something that we'd love to see: undead foes, over-the-top fighting and organised crime? Oh my word, yes.

And what the team has so far looks the business, with David Fincher on-board to direct, Clancy Brown (whose vocal talents you may have heard in various DC animated shows, primarily as Lex Luthor) to voice the Goon and Paul Giamatti to voice his sidekick, Franky.

But so far, progress has been slow. As Blur Studio stated on the film's Kickstarter page:

We created "proof-of-concept" footage to show Hollywood the incredible potential of a Goon movie. It was very well received, but because this movie isn't a sequel or filled with dancing animals, we'll need more to bust open the gates and unleash Goon and Franky on Hollywood.

Now, we need to be clear: the US$400,000 that Blur Studio needs will not be to make the film, but to create a story reel — that is, images from the story board paired with the film's soundtrack to demonstrate the film. In order to make it the best film it can be, the studio said that it requires US$35 million in funding, which it hopes to get from a Hollywood backer; so far, Fincher and Blur Studio between them have spent over US$500,000 of their own money trying to get the film made.

Finally, we came up with — we hope — a way that we can create something that will move the ball forward, and do it at a cost that falls within the realm of what we could reasonably ask the fans for via Kickstarter. We know it would be great if it was the finished film, but it's just not possible, but we believe this can really move the needle.

Not just having something that we can sit studio execs in front of to watch, but also a grand gesture of support for the fans for the project. Hollywood feels warm and fuzzy when they know there's an audience for material — this will help prove that.

If you want to help the team get it done, watch the video below for the pitch and head over to "The Goon" Movie Kickstarter page for more information and to make a donation.
