Hublot's record-breaking Ferarri watch

With fast cars come fancy watches, and with the unveiling of Ferrari's magnificent new flagship supercar, the LaFerrari, comes an appropriately gorgeous timepiece — Hublot's MP-05 LaFerrari.

Ferrari has been hopping around watch partnerships for the last few years. In 2010, it ended a long-term relationship with Panerai to hook up with Cabestan — only to jump into bed with Hublot in November 2012. The partnership so far seems to be going great — as evidenced by the Masterpiece MP-05 LaFerrari, the timepiece that goes hand-in-hand with Ferrari's new flagship LaFerrari supercar.

The Masterpiece MP-05 LaFerrari watch is unusual for Hublot, which is well known for its oversized Big Bang and King Power watches. The first vertical movement from the manufacturer, it features a column of 11 mainspring barrels running on frictionless synthetic ruby rollers along the middle length of the face, powering the movement with a 50-day power reserve. This is massive for a mechanical tourbillon watch — a world record, in fact — unfortunately, it's offset by a winding process that's so arduous that it requires a special tool, included in the watch's box.

The other record the watch breaks is the number of parts it comprises — 637, the most parts ever in a Hublot timepiece — and that's just in the movement. Interestingly, in spite of this, it's very light on the complications. Actually, it only has one: a power reserve indicator displayed on a black anodised aluminium cylinder. There are four of these cylinders in the watch face: the two on the right side of the mainspring column show hours and minutes; the two on the left show seconds and the aforementioned power reserve.

The watch was developed in parallel with LaFerrari, the two teams working side-by-side to develop design elements in common. This can be seen in the sleekly curved shape of the MP-05 LaFerrari's stunning sapphire crystal, the carbon fibre accent on the top of the PVD-coated titanium case and the Ferrari red highlights on the indicator cylinders. The indicator cylinders have numerals picked out in Superluminova for low-light visibility and, at 45.8 millimetres long by 39.5 millimetres wide for the movement, and at 15.3 millimetres thick, it's a watch that wants to be seen.

Although LaFerrari was limited to a run of just 499 cars, the Masterpiece MP-05 LeFerrari is even more exclusive, limited to just 50 timepieces. Each one will go for around 300,000 Swiss francs — AU$311,206 at time of writing.
