Walmart will be the Windows Phone 8 device's exclusive provider for its U.S. launch later in May.

Huawei's first Windows Phone 8 handset, the Huawei W1 , lands later this month in select Walmart stores and on Walmart.com.

The handset, known globally as the Huawei Ascend W1, by the way, is an entry-level device with a 4-inch LCD display, a 1.2GHZ dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, and a 5-megapixel camera that can capture 720p HD video.

That's not all, of course. The specs continue with a VGA front-facing camera, and the phone comes with an Adreno 305 400MHz GPU. Although there will only be 1.7GB of available user storage, the W1 will come with a microSD card slot that accepts cards with capacities up to 32GB for your multimedia storage needs.

We don't have pricing or precise availability for you yet -- and we're still waiting on carrier information, too -- but the fact that the phone sells at Walmart suggests it'll be an off-contract handset offered at full retail value. Huawei's strategy is to aim for the low or middle range with affordable handsets, especially off-contract. With these specs, that's what you should entirely expect.

Unlike global versions, which come in a range of bright colors that look extremely similar to the Nokia Lumia and HTC Windows Phone lines with their loud hues and sharp edges, this U.S.-bound W1 comes in black.
