A professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois, US, Hammack goes by the moniker "EngineerGuy" online, demystifying complicated mechanical concepts.

His YouTube channel goes back two years and explores such devices as the black box flight recorder, fibre optic cable and smartphone orientation, with easy-to-understand animations and explanations.

His explanation of the microwave oven, below, is fascinating, breaking down the components that drive the machine and then describing exactly what happens on a molecular level.

Check it out, then go spend an hour or two on the rest of his channel — and don't forget to take a look at his book, Eight Amazing Engineering Stories. You won't regret it.
