It's a spooky time of year, so put your feet up, relax and watch some of our favourite creepy short films.

The Sandman by Paul Berry

Paul Berry was something of a master of stop-motion animation. You may have seen his work — his oeuvre includes The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monkeybone and James and the Giant Peach. Slightly lesser-known is a short, 10-minute film called The Sandman, which was made in 1991 — a short that makes our blood run cold.

Paul Berry died in 2001 at the age of 40 from a brain tumour. We consider this his finest work.

The Cat with Hands by Robert Morgan

If there's one thing we know about this film, it's that you'll never again be able to hear "The Miner's Dream of Home" without feeling a chill.

The Cat with Hands is possibly film-maker Robert Morgan's most famous work to date, but he has a few more equally brilliant short works under his belt. You can find them on his website here.

The Cat Piano by The People's Republic of Animation

The cat piano, or katzenklavier, was a conceptual instrument described by philosopher and scholar Athanasius Kirscher in his 1650 book Musurgia Universalis. It was an organ that produced sounds by driving nails into the tails of imprisoned cats. The Cat Piano takes that concept and puts it in an eerily noir-ish world, dramatically narrated by Nick Cave.
