Get Nuance PaperPort 14 for $49.99
That's half off the regular price, and far less than you'll find it just about anywhere else.
I'm a longtime fan of PaperPort, which began life as a scanner/software combination and now exists solely as software. I've never found a better solution for organizing and preserving scanned documents, which is why PaperPort is among the few software products I'm actually willing to buy.
But $99.99? Ouch. That's the list price for the latest version. Fortunately, software developer Nuance has partnered with Laplink to offer PaperPort 14 (Windows) for $49.99. (Just to clarify, this is PaperPort Standard, not PaperPort Pro.)
That's for the download version, though you can get a boxed copy for the same price--plus $9.95 for shipping. (To choose your version, mouse over the PaperPort link in your shopping cart.)
For those unfamiliar with it, PaperPort works with any scanner to organize, search, and share documents and photos. I've always likened it to an electronic filing cabinet for your PC, as it relies on a simple folder structure for managing your scans.
So instead of storing all your old bills, tax returns, receipts, and the like, just scan 'em and toss 'em. PaperPort lets you fill out scanned forms, clean up scanned photos, convert scanned documents into editable text, and much more.
There's also the new PaperPort Anywhere service, which extends document management to "the cloud" (or "the Internet" for those of you who hate buzzwords). With it you can make documents available online or on your smartphone (free apps are available for Android and iOS). PaperPort Anywhere starts you off with 1GB of free storage; if you need more, it's available (for a price, of course).
CNET hasn't reviewed PaperPort 14, but I feel confident in recommending it--especially at $49.99. If you already own a scanner and want to get more out of it, this is a great solution.
That said, if you know of a better (and/or cheaper) scanner-friendly document manager, hit the comments and tell me about it!
Bonus deal: Like audiobooks? From now until August 31, Audible.com is offering a new "listener favorite" each day for just $7.95. Today's pick: "Watership Down." A couple days ago, it was "Life of Pi." (Previous titles remain available through the end of the sale.)
