Called Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, the title has also been released for Windows PC and is coming soon for Mac OS and Android. Tidied up by Beamdog's Overhaul Games, it's been dusted off and tweaked for newer platforms.

Those tweaks include new playable characters, a new mission and a number of enhancements, including an updated touch interface, cross-platform multiplayer, new cinematics, over 400 issues and bugs cleared up from the original source code to make the game faster and features from Baldur's Gate 2 (such as class kits, new races and new classes) have been added.

It sounds great and, for the hardcore nostalgites out there, it's a solid port that will absolutely take you back to 1998. It has all the intricate party management and battle planning, as well as the loot collection and character upgrading that we loved — and the ability to zoom was a welcome addition.

However, we did have one major gripe — the graphics. Although the graphics have been enhanced, they still look outdated, particularly on a retina display. Thanks to the brooding, dingy nature of the game, objects on the screen can be a little hard to make out, and the character sprites are almost embarrassingly rough compared to the environments.

Nevertheless, it doesn't get more Dungeons & Dragons-style RPG than this; and for many, Baldur's Gate was an introduction to that world. If your love for the franchise is enough to get you past its shortcomings, this new title is definitely worth your time.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for iPad (AU$10.49) and PC (US$19.99).
