Maingear F131

Show summary: Ignore the side panel. Maingear has an outstanding deal in this high-end F131 gaming desktop, which is one of the fastest PCs we've seen all year. We recommend this system without hesitation to serious PC gamers and those interested in a high-performance, high-value computer.

eMachines ER1402-05

Show summary: eMachines ER1402-05 is a strong living-room Nettop among others like it, but it doesn't compete well in the larger picture of living-room entertainment devices like game consoles, media streamers, and video service-equipped Blu-ray players. It's worth a look if you need a desktop of this particular type, but keep shopping if you need a connected living-room media device.

Acer Aspire Predator

Show summary: You'll probably decide pretty quickly whether you like the Acer Aspire Predator's looks. Those in favor will also find a higher-end gaming PC with reasonably fast performance and plenty of room to expand and upgrade. Not everyone will appreciate the Predator's visual charms, but we recommend this PC to those who do.

Sony VAIO J114FX

Show summary: We like the idea of a Blu-ray-equipped all-in-one with a small footprint for home entertainment, but Sony badly missed the mark with the Vaio J114FX. In trying to make this system focused, Sony cut too many features. The result is that this PC is a terrible value relative to other all-in-ones in its price range.

Acer Aspire 5700

Show summary: Acer's Aspire Z5700 is a fast, media-friendly all-in-one that would serve well as a media hub in a dorm or a den. We'd like to see a bit more polish in its design, and a Blu-ray drive would make it a home run, but on balance we can recommend this system for its speed, its large screen, and its digital media versatility.

Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse

Show summary: Microsoft's new Arc Touch Mouse features a travel-friendly design and some clever technical touches to its touch-sensitive scroll tab. Neither of those features make this mouse better than a full sized desktop mouse, but the Arc Touch Mouse is unique enough in its form and in some of its functions that it should appeal to those looking to make a statement with their technology.

Apple iMac summer 2010 (Intel Core i5 2.8GHz, 27 in)

Show summary: Apple's highest-end 27-inch iMac gets a welcome CPU and graphics card update that, along with its giant display, makes it even more competitive than its best-in-class model was previously. Its high overall appeal makes the absence of an HDMI input particularly glaring, but on balance we can recommend the 27-inch iMac to anyone looking for a large screen, high-end all-in-one.

Show summary: Like a supervillain's IT guy, AMD wants to set you up with a massive amount of screen real estate via its ATI Eyefinity graphics card technology.
