Other ways to make money
I think ebay will make their money on sponsored ad revenue, which is something craigs won't do--nice that the 25 million a year he makes gives him the choice. Although I noticed craigs is starting to charge now for their job postings in Sacramento, so let's not forget that craigs does gradually charge for certain types of postings, and most likely will continue to do that in the future. Maybe ebay will also do the charging gradually, and only in more commercial categories, like craigs.
But I agree, why pay for something when the free is already out there?
Here's a question--how 'bout getting paid for your listings? isn't that better than just free? and better than ebay insertion fees? that's what a friend of mine is trying out on www.listasaurus.com. I personally think it's a great concept, and while it may not take down craigs or ebay (for a while, lol), hopefully there's still room for a little competition.
Hey, look at what Google did when Yahoo was already the big gun...

Definitely overrun
Although I've used craigslist to occasional success (mostly when listing items I'm giving away, otherwise people don't seem to want to pay even $5.00 for something--or they say they want it and never show up), I have to agree that it has become overwhelmed by too many fake or spam ads. (though I still love to read the "Best of")I think this could be remedied by at least requiring people to have an account in order to place an ad, or charging a tiny fee. But who knows.
A friend of mine actually started a site inspired by what craigs has become...they are trying something new--they actually pay people to list their ads (only 25 cents per listing, but hey it all ads up!). They are also going to be doing auctions soon with the same pay per listing concept(inspired by ebays insane fees).
Anyway if anyone wants to check it out and give them some feedback, I'm sure they'd appreciate it. It's www.listasaurus.com. (And like ebay, I agree there's room out there for many different avenues to sell or giveaway your excess.)
