Why do we bother to play games?
The digital entertainment market faces the same concerns as and other entertainment venues. Real casinos are adult fun. Console casino games do indeed draw audiences from its real life counter part. Likewise, NFL football gamers are likely to draw upon real experiences as a player or a fan. Serious games suffer from the problems that children's edutainment suffer from--the lack of interest that persons tend to have when the experience focuses on learning rather than entertainment. Perhaps it is a bad marketing plan to tell gamers they are in for an educational experience. Moreover, the enjoyment people have from entertainment that is intertwined with favorable memories does not come from a learning experience. Most gamers would settle for a good story and a way to share game play, even if only to talk about it. Yet, there is still hope that the way to be a good story or game element is to get serious.

Violence and children
Exposure to violent media in early childhood has been show to correlate with violent behavior in adulthood. The longitudinal studies on children and violence I refer to do not include console games and focused on children between 4-7 years of age. The controversy surrounding Grand Theft Auto spans from its content to its effects on children, however, gamers age 4-7 are unlikely to be playing M rated games.

Gamers are not just getting older.
Gamers are getting older and the new crop of M (Mature) rated titles shares the motifs of popular mature media. Among the most popular of the M rated games is Grand Theft Auto. The effects of heavy gaming on sensation seekers certianly include sleep deprivation. Not as closely tied to antisocial behavior as recently thought, avatars and other aspects of gaming may not pose a threat to the psychological well being (such as identity formation) in healthy children. However, gaming media is likely to shape attitudes and opinions much like other media. The messages in the new crop of M rated media tends to be lowest common denominator, but the market for this media is moved by shock value. M rated media does appear to produce meta-messages that are often derogatory. Will M rated games become less accessible to children and young adults then other mature media?

Sony Ericsson Funeral Camera Phone
Is this how Eastman Kodak CCD technology is being used? Perhaps a more interesting story would cover the Eastman Kodak v. Sony case. Sony and others have used Eastman Kodak?s CCD technology and demosaicing process without paying licensing fees for years. It looks like it will be the highest garnering lawsuit in IP history.

One card, one country. The Federal ID Card
The Real ID Card might be a snag for individuals that use a vacation home address as their primary address to take advantage of out of state traffic violations (Nonresident Violator) and to send their subpoenas on vacation (out-of-state subpoena process). Paranoiacs might be more afraid of federal databases on the account of a federal ID. However, in addition to an improvement on our system of personal identification, most will find it offers convenience, practicality and provides increased identity security for travel and business.

Did they pinky swear?
Louis Freeh may very well have been true to his word about the FBI's use of surveillance. However, it is foolish to expect the promises of one Director's administration to be upheld by another. Congress has a notorious reputation for imposing on rights. Perhaps a Supreme Court decision on this matter will clarify any rights Americans have with regard to the tracking of personal digital consumer products by commercial and governmental groups.

Making Google Richer...
Why are Harvard and other renowned institutions with enormous library collections offering their collections to Google free of charge? Perhaps being chummy with Goolge billionaires outweighs any interest in protection of the millions of authors whose works will be on display. More importantly, Google is an aging search engine with a highly emulate-able search scheme. While Google, in terms of wealth, easily possesses enough money to develop and to adapt to future search methodologies and currently sits atop the class of Internet search engines, its current incarnation is by no means the search engine of the future. It is disappointing to see enduring and renowned institutions go after an easy buck.

According to Google Law?
I am concerned about Google censorship of free speech on the Internet. Google is censoring a legitimate automaker, obviously the BMW marquee should rank high in a search engine. Most troubling is that Google is regulating the way the company uses information on the Internet. Perhaps a Google monopoly exits, Google employees believe that the automaker?s response to censor its website was ?compulsory.?
