  Great question, indeed, but actually, there actually are lots and lots of WPF applications in the marketplace right now. What I believe you really ask is: "why aren't there more Windows applications with impressive user interfaces?" The answer lies in looking at the history of the tools that have been available to create UI for Windows applications. As a WPF developer and designer, as well as a Flash/Flex developer and designer, I provide some insight into this question on my blog.
