I could not agree with this article more. In fact, this may explain why newly developed social networks tend to revolve around niche communities as opposed to general-interest content. For example, My Black Networks (MBN), LLC, a start-up based in Austin, TX, will be launching its portal site www.myblacknetworks.com in late September 2008. MBN is targeting unique segments of individuals of African descent via an ecosystem of informational websites. The MyBlack? Urban Vertical will seek to deliver relevant local content to and about the target audiences in those communities. The vertical will include localized sites of several urban centers throughout the Diaspora; including the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Brazil, France, the U.K., and capitals of African countries. All city sites will include the MyBlack? brand (e.g. MyBlack? Austin).
Perhaps it is Yahoo?s recognition of the future, the inevitable disaggregation (or as Joseph Schumpeter coined ?creative destruction?) of general-interest networks into relatively smaller, but more salient, niche communities, that is driving their decision to abandon Mash
