I wouldn't count on it
We all know how insanely obsessive Sony is about DRM and protecting their IP. I wouldn't hold my breath, if I were you, on a fully functional Linux system coming with the PS3.
I would be very surprised if it truely is a full featured Linux distribution, completely open, and customizable as Linux should be.
But I'm certainly not going to hold my breath. You would be wise to do the same.

Correction
"Kutagari (is that how you spell it) and Haz have repeatedly stated that they haven't even begun production of them, and not only plan for 2 million at release, but 2 million more before the years end. If they can pull it off, I'll be impressed."
If they can pull it off and not have massive system failures following... I'll be impressed.

Future thinking my a**
"They aren't "spinning" it as a necessity NOW, they are talking about 6 years from now, after developers have discovered new techniques and tricks, and when X360 or PC games would have to start spanning two discs Sony will still be cruising with one. ...But by then Big M will be hyping the XBox 720 or 3 or whatever because they want to sell a new box to public."
They are most certainly spinning it as a necessity
now, and not 6 years from now. And only a fool would think that within 5 to 6 years time, Sony won't be trying to hawk their next Playstation right alongside MS's next Xbox.

That's kind of the point...
It's OPTIONAL. That's the whole point. If you don't want HD movies, don't buy the add-on. Sony is shoving BR down your throat with the PS3, whether you care to have HD movies or not.
The extra space needed for games is largely a myth (take a look at Oblivion on X360, huge game on a single non-HD DVD). There is, to my knowledge, only one game currently in development for PS3, that is using some 22GB (Resistance: Fall of Man)... I'd bet dollars to donuts the vast majority of that is taken up by HD resolution FMV's, and not actual game content.
I'm sorry, but I'd feel much more satisfied with a $60+ purchase that I get 100+ hours of gameplay out of (Oblivion), than a game that if I'm lucky I'll get 10 hours of gameplay (R:FoM) out of, with probably at least 1/4 of that being FMV.
Saying that BR is necessary for next-gen games is Sony's way of not admitting the only reason they're forcing BR with the PS3 is to try and flood the market with BR players hoping to win the HD format war.
Will games eventually get to the point where they need more than a DVD's worth of space for actual content? Sure, someday. But with current games typically clocking in at less than 6 gigs, a 9 gig DVD still allows for +50% more content, at the least. That is, of course, if developers don't rely on FMV cutscenes every 5 seconds.

The problem is no one knows
"I had read that the Wii will be on par with the orginal Xbox...which was technically better than the PS2 but not buy much."
The only official statement by Nintendo on the Wii's power is that it will be 2 to 3 times as powerful as the Gamecube.
The Gamecube was nearly on par with the Xbox (it lacked a bit of ram, but graphically and raw performance, it was neck and neck), and both were considerably more technically superior to the PS2.
All the "specs" floating around about the Wii are rumors until there is some confirmation. I've seen specs ranging from as little as a 50% overclock of the Gamecube (which is obviously well under Nintendo's 2 to 3 times as powerful statement), up to a 2GHz dual-core cpu with 550MHz gpu that rivals the Xbox 360 gpu's performance (which is a bit more than Nintendo's 2 to 3 times as powerful statement... though not by much).
Until there's official specs, take any you see with a grain of salt.

Dont' forget...
"The Wii, you have a fantastic new experience that many in the family will enjoy, but fewer games at present."
Don't forget the Wii is fully compatible with the Gamecube games, as well as the Virtual Console which will have access to the entire back cataloge of Nintendo games, from NES to N64, and also include some Sega and NEC (Turbo Graphix) games.
