Alternatives Exist
I agree with the general themes raised in this article. A friend of mine and I recently created an online social networking site called Meeteor (http://www.meeteor.com) for alumni from top schools. The advantage of this approach is that the people are who they say they are and can be checked out by friends of friends before meeting.
