Losing to Win.
We all know the XBox division absorbed a loss for the first several years of production, sure this was covered in other areas of sales overall, but ultimately that's what it takes to break into a unfamiliar market. They survived on Halo for a while, but have since broken even ground and now are in the black while Sony is playing catch up.
Now the second generation, 360, is cleaning up. Users can't get enough of it and are complaining about not enough games for it (this is a good thing for MS, as it means they're systems are being played). That will come in due time, and it'll be neck and neck with the PS3 (if they ever get their sh*t together).
The Zune is on a similar path. MS is basically saying that our power will keep us in the game here. They're not taking on Apple but yet taking on sales in the portable music arena (which is what most fail to understand). They aim to cut out some similar competitors to gain market share and build a name for themselves; while adding sales and foot traffic.
Will you see the same sales as iPod? Not initially, hell, not for some time but they'll get there.
I look forward to the future of this XBox 360 meets zune meets Media Center land (albeit Linux). It'll happen, just watch the slow but perpetual market share growth turn into sales, downloads, links and overall users.

Ur a F'n Idiot
Thats gotta be one of the most ignorant comments I've ever heard.......****** idiot.
I've used multiple mac machines, many many more linux machines, and thousands of windows machines, and you know what?!?? They all crash the same. They all run software both good and bad, however not all users are flamers who feel a neccessity to shamelessly promote their product to no end!!!
Use it and shut ur f'n mouth.....are you bragging and bashing a computer user??!! ********!!!

You've got to be 5 years old?
Impressive that you have an email account and can type at such a young, ignorant age!
Really though, technology is much less about breaking new products and more about bettering current technologies. You'd probably knew that though.

speaking of trolls.....
I'd say it would be tough to create a new UI and not have a learning curve of some sort; and I'd prefer a learning curve to some extent; usually changes are made for the better.
Your argument about the search vs people learning how to locate things is worthless and it expresses your ignorance. People like myself are going to learn the file structure and locations regardless of a search feature. A 3rd grader can tell you it's for locating a file where you might not remember where you placed it.
Virtual UI's......tried virtual pc? Run your xp, 2000, 98, linux and a slew of other os's & iso's.
What does interest me is all the switchers running XP on their macs, that's an interesting discussion......oh right, for testing.

wrong Glen
So what you're saying is if we put iTunes everywhere feasibly possible and with anything that might possibly play audio, our job here is a wrap? Wait, but only 5 copies? So I can't play it on my work machine, cause that would make it 6..hmm?!?! As for engaging your brain, I think tha't a wonderful idea, but with you I'd rather we do that before putting your keyboard to work.
Meglena Kuneva is indicating that we/users should be able to play an audio file on any particular device and most importantly, outside of the application it was downloaded.
Some years ago we had a couple of standards, the .wav and the .mp3. Now we've converged on a multiplex of different audio formats and it's done nothing but create havoc for everyone involved (Glen I realize you probably own a mac and an iPod ((and would probably drink Steve Jobs iUrine if you could))) but keep in mind while the iPod holds a large market share, then Mac does not. Now you're forcing people to download/install/run your software to play something they've purchased.
I commend Meglena Kuneva for bringing this out, while they tend to be sue happy at least their hitting the 2-facer in the face.

RU Serious?
Hey retard, where in the article did you read anything about Vista? Whats this, you didn't? Than shut the h*ll up and use your voice somewhere better served, like for instance your credit card company when you finish off your lay away program for the unfriendly device you have in front of you.
Until then, p*ss off chap!

Vince, aka Hatchetman
Really, nobody cares about DRM, copyrights, trademarks except corporations. Pick any user who has an ounce of intelligence and that's the last thing they worry about.

Relentless
I'm shocked just about every day when I read an article or two and hear how biased this site is. If it's so entirely biased, why do you continue to read articles?!?!?
It's time to step back, read an article for what it's worth, if you agree great, if you disagree, than equally great.
But for crying out loud, please refrain from saying how biased these reports are.
Is it wrong for a reviewer to use a Mac when writing a story about a Mac? How about using a PC to write about a Mac? How about using a Mac to write about a PC? Get over it....my favorite color is gray, yours is pink, his is red and hers green.
Who wants to spend their time bashing product reviews anyways???? Get a life!!!!!

Devolution at its finest??
While it seems like there is a lot of highly educated comments, articles, etc; it seems that every article written inevitably gets to a Microsoft vs Apple bashing session.
I'm tired of the idiots constant saying this is better than that, my OS is better, this OS has more holes/exploits than this....it's childish.
We've grown away from the concept of the personal computer, it creates a platform for creation and communication. I don't care what OS you're running, I care about what you're doing with that OS. What content/application/database/automation/design/creative thing are you starting and completing? To hell with your security features and bells and whistles.
Until you do something with that machine you're simply being taken advantage of by clever marketing companies who've probably indicated what you needed your entire life (materialistic Americans at their finest).
If you're bashing one OS or another you better be a developer otherwise you're about as lame as a child rapist.

Nonsense
We currently have the ability to choose from three mainstreem OS's, XP, Linux, and OS X. I suggest you attempt using several of them and see what your needs are as each OS has different strength and weaknesses.
See, I can throw Linux on a wide variety of extremely inexpensive and often outdated hardware mixtures and get good response from the unit, however setup will be a bit difficult if you're a newbie. Applications are much harder to come by as they have to be ported to this OS (rarely) or you can attempt to find a similar app (likely). All in all it's a good thing for our OS world.
Microsoft can be placed on relatively decent hardware at a very reasonable price as you can build your own for next to nothing. You can run any application made that doesn't begin with an i. Apps are readily available on the net, and if you're comfortable using running an anti-virus app, a firewall, and performing updates, you've got a pretty solid machine, at a really reasonable price, with any and all apps at your fingertips.
Not only is XP good for the consumer, it's also good for the competition as it gives them something to take aim at.
The other group of fanboi's....where do I begin? Your hardware is expensive, you have an extremely limited amount of applications, and the best thing you have running right now is the ability to run XP on your machine. Dont' get me wrong, the design features of OS X are nice; the hardware design is nice....but your price tag, limited software set, everything for is named i-this or i-that, the inability to upgrade hardware, the inability to build your own at a huge discount, the inablity to get readily available software, and the rediculuously closed minded users that don't realize both Linux and MS are hands down better than OS X are just a few reasons why the Mac is such a turn off to users.
But what do I know.....I just sell hardware for a living and remain rather unbiased in my pursuit of selling cars to the blind.
