  • Where to start? Yes sudden violence has appeared through history. It does not involve guns in all situations. In Malaysia it is called Amok. Among the Navajo, iich'aa. Here in the United States it is called Going Postal. These are all Culture Bound Syndromes.
In Japan recently a video game player rented a truck, drove into a crowd, jumped out stabbed seventeen killing seven.
The cause of these events may be explainable as Subliminal Distraction exposure meets sociopath. Subliminal Distraction is explained in college psychology under psychophysics, the physiology of sight. SD was discovered as a problem when it caused mental breaks for office workers. The cubicle and Cubicle Level Protection were created to deal with the vision startle reflex to stop the problem by 1968. So few people know about this phenomenon that it is never investigated. Auvinen, the Joleka shooter, created the circumstances for SD exposure in his home computer location beside a closet door mirror.

Several mass shooters had this exposure and most gave no warning. VisionAndPsychosis.Net has a five year investigation of these shootings. In reply to: "Finland massacre: YouTube provided early warning"

  • Correlation Not Causation
There is a definite correlation between video game playing and sudden violence. But causation is a different problem.

There is a little known problem with human physiology that was discovered when it caused mental breaks for office workers in the 1960's.

The simple explanation for causation is that the seriously effected gamers are accidentally creating the "special circumstances" for exposure to Subliminal Distraction. That is the name for the problem outside the United States.

Those few who do the mass shootings or commit suicide have a different experience from the majority of players. They act out of stress when the mental break happens. In reply to: "'Grand Theft Auto' slammed again"

  • Video Game content not the problem
Those who have serious outcomes connected to video game play are probably victims of exposure to Subliminal Distraction.

The problem was discovered when knowledge workers using the first prototypes of close-spaced movable office workstations began to have mental breaks.

Subliminal Sight and peripheral vision reflexes had operated in the special circumstances those workstations created to cause the mental breaks. The cubicle solved that problem by 1968. Cubicles are designed to block side or peripheral vision to limit the subliminal detection of threat movement while the worker is concentrating.

The situation is so simple that video game players can accidentally create the circumstances and will have the same mental break if a threshold of exposure is reached.

The Redlake shooter left a journal entry that shows what he did to cause exposure.

VisionAndPsychosis.Net is a private psychology project about the 'conflict of physiology' that allows this to happen.

  • Cubicle Level Protection
When I read the title of this article I thought it would tell why the Cubicle was created.

Fifty years ago engineer designers accidentally found a conflict of physiology when workers in the first close-spaced workstations began having bizarre or psychotic episodes.

The problem was peripheral vision reflexes and the solution was to block the side vision of knowledge workers to prevent the detection of repeating movement in the office. The Cubicle did that. Later designs demonstrate that the worker can be protected without the tall confining walls.

VisionAndPsychosis.Net is about the conflict of physiology and how it shaped history but was undetected until the accidental design mistake those engineers created.
