My comments

  • Dear friends,

    SUBJECT:
Invitation to participate and make a presentation, at the Hope 2008 International Conference, being held in India in October 2008.

Organized by Drug Abuse Information Rehabilitation and Research Centre, India,
(in consultative status with the United Nations? Economic and Social Council)

(Supported by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India, National Institute of Social Defence and with partial support from the GoI-WHO collaborative program)

At the outset we would like to place on record our admiration of your endeavors and commendable activities targeted towards environmental conservation, research, and education.

    The premise:-

You will agree that ever since humankind has misused its creative ability, and tried to tamper with natural perfection, it has only succeeded in disturbing the extremely fragile balance of nature, and this has led to the creation of a host of human made miseries and diseases. While at times, we have deluded ourselves by hiding behind façades of ?necessary development and scientific progress?, the fact remains, that we have taken undue advantage of Mother Nature, and it is high time, that we began to make serious amends.

One need not look further than one?s doorstep to see the ravages of human excess. It is evident in each and every aspect of life, today. Below are facts that speak for themselves.

    - Thousands of the world's species of flora and fauna, are extinct, today, or face extinction. Every day, 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitats are destroyed by humans.

    - More than 20 percent of all freshwater fish species are now threatened or endangered because dams and water withdrawals have destroyed the free-flowing river ecosystems where they thrive.

    - Fishing fleets are 40 percent larger than the ocean can sustain

    - Global warming is reaching dangerous levels

    - Plastic wastes continue to stack up in landfills

    - Ozone levels have reached far beyond acceptable limits

    - Over 65,000 square miles of rainforests are being destroyed each year

    - Approximately 4 billion tons of carbon accumulates in the air each year, with almost 30% of this coming directly from the continued burning of the rainforests

    - Over half of the world?s tropical forests have been lost, through logging and conversion

    - Soil degradation has affected two-thirds of the world?s agricultural lands in the last 50 years

    - The human race is now so numerous and its technological power so great that we are having an unprecedented impact on the biosphere, the entire planet.

    - During the past hundred years, the natural environment has borne the stresses imposed by a fourfold increase in human numbers and an eighteenfold growth in world economic output.

We invite you to join us in addressing the problem of Environmental Exploitation, which is one of the 5 main issues that threaten our planet?s survival.

    Who we are:-

DAIRRC is India's premier institution for the last two decades, involved in the crusade against Substance Abuse and its related problems including HIV/AIDS. It has ingeniously discovered time tested techniques of identification, treatment, recovery and rehabilitation of victims of Substance Abuse. Through its voluntary treatment and rehabilitation schemes it is in a position to have a unbiased view on the issues arising from Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS from the Indian perspective.
DAIRRC has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council.

    Our past conferences:-

DAIRRC, along with UNAIDS, United Nations Drug Control Programme, National AIDS Control Organisation and the Ministry of Health, Government of India, had earlier convened hope2000 , hope2002 and hope2005 which were extremely successful International Conferences that addressed the issues of HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, Environment, Population and Human Rights, in India at the Taj President Hotel, and the Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai.

All these conferences have been highly praised by the International Community which regard them as milestones in their respective fields, in the Asia Pacific region.

During these conferences, international experts from Drug Demand Reduction, Drug Supply Reduction, Population Research, Health and Medicine, Environment organizations, Trade and Industry, Helplines and Adjuvant Therapeutic Groups, Human Rights organizations, Youth and Social Workers' Organisations had attended and shared their expertise.

These were the only occasions, when such a distinguished group of international professionals in these fields had gathered together under one roof in India, and the forum of discussions that took place, has certainly indicated the possibility of a more streamlined approach towards the alleviation of human problems.
