@gwalio247, I agree with you that the music industry was caught napping on the digital revolution and they had a comfortable business model of one or two good songs on a CD with much of the rest of the content being crap and charging 15 bucks for the CD. They should have changed that model to one that was more customer friendly.
But... if people stopped ripping and "borrowing" music via peer to peer networks do you think they would be in financial trouble? I don't think so. I do agree with you that these DRM locks and the DMCA legal threats are insidious but the guys who understand the online market in the Music industry and want to change their model are probably being ignored by the bosses.

Rafe, I hope someone at WSJ pays attention to what you are saying. These people just don't seem to understand the opportunities in the online market.
Unlike a lot of the top web 2.0 opinionmaker types who think all online content should be free and that producers should figure out other ways to make money, I am willing to pay full price for my local paper in paper form. They should then give me free access online, as a subscriber. Sadly the SF Chron seems to be on a downward spiral but that's another story.
I am also willing to pay "something" for news and other content from other top sites I visit regularly. For example I check out NY Times online every day. I'll be happy to pay $25 a year for their online version in any format and any number of devices I get can get it on. I don't live in NY or their local service area and I don't want their paper but I do want online access, this should be money in the bank for them. I suspect if the closed the free access and started charging a nominal amount they would still get a lot of subscribers from outside their paper delivery areas. I would probably subscribe to a dozen such sources.
A well edited news site is in my opinion way better than getting raw unedited content from various blogger sites only to have some of them retract their reporting during the day.

Chris, seriously. eBay, nice guy? if you can believe that then I can sell you the GG Bridge. eBay and their subsidiary, PayPal never really consider their customers as valuable just an annoyance they have to put up with. Both nice apps but the entire Board of Directors, the senior management and their marketing team need to be cleaned out. or some credible competition has to show up to reform these guys.
i would any day believe Craig Newmark, he's a decent guy. The problem he should have anticipated was that one of his partners would sell his stock in Craigslist to eBay and cash out. I would do anything to get out of that relationship, I suppose he feels slimed every time he has to deal with them.

@brian.lee, I was not aware that you could buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple? I have an iPhone from overseas that I can't use in the U.S. and I would much rather have my teeth pulled before I'll pay AT&T more money than I already do to buy yet another iPhone for when I am here. I thought I would switch to a Droid and Verizon but they are not necessarily any cheaper.
As to jailbreaking the iphone: There's not enough free time in my life to be part of a Geek War with Apple on one side and the jailbreakers on the other...the whole thing is so silly.

Unlocked Apple iPhones
I don't know why anyone should be shocked or surprised. A search in Google brings up any number of unlocked iphones for sale even in India where I am traveling on work and even the CNET's sponsored links had them. I know at least a half a dozen people in my limited circle here with the less than full featured iPhones .
As long as AT&T or their other international partners "looks" the other way Apple can have the cake and eat it too.
I will still not buy one as long as ATT (my carrier) forces me onto yet another expensive plan and kindly sells the phone at full price...

Re: Is Steve Jobs pigheaded?
Interesting pro and con arguments. I love my iPODs and the experience I get from it. However, people in this industry know that the competition is not going away. One of the most recent examples is how Palm is got marginalized. At some point Microsoft, Real and others will get it right and then we'll see a real threat to the Apple system. One really cannot blame Apple (and Steve) for their current strategy while the $$ pours in but time is against them. At some point Apple will have to get pragmatic and decide whether it wants to lead this industry or become just another participant while some other "company" yanks the chains. The next few years will be very interesting.
