  • The issue from an IT perspective is that Windows OS as a client is a constraint. That is primarily because MS has always worked toward vendor lock-in rather than interoperability and still does. The issue from a strategic, long term view, is how do we get out from under that constraint without disrupting users, the flow of information, and productivity? The solution that presents itself is a slow, creeping migration.

Today, that means more open source in the server room than ever before, the roll-out of more web based apps, and the introduction of non-windows thin clients in the office.

I agree, MS is not going to disappear quickly from the enterprise. But I also highly doubt I am the only IT guy guiding it toward the door. In reply to: "When it comes to understanding IT, groupthink only gets you so far"

  • These discussions and articles are so boring. My 84 year-old mother, a grandmother of five, uses Ubuntu Linux desktop. She has two panels. One she never uses and one that has her five main applications at the top with very large icons. She emails her grandkids, she chats with me, she plays her cards, she browses home sales, and she listens to music or views her photos. Painlessly, effortlessly, and without any tech support.

The difficulties my mother would endure from one OS to another would probably be much the same if someone was to deliver her a computer without any concern for her abilities, her uses, and the applications she would use and said to her, "well, go at it."

Like any user with limited skills or even very specific needs, a little customization and a short tutorial goes a long way. And that is not OS specific.

All this never-ending BS about "my OS is better than your OS" is tiresome and points more to writers without any topic ideas than any real issue regarding Operating Systems and users. In reply to: "Why your grandma doesn't run desktop Linux"
