  • It is a tough sell for sure. Companies are very concerned about ROI, but I think the benefits of having a community can be hard to see for some companies. Often times you have a built in beta testing group or dedicated customers that can help you make product choices. I do agree there is more to it than just ROI, but right now it is still hard to figure out what that other component is.

  • It does look like Facebook is going after a more international audience. They are still going to remain in the social space, but just gain more international audience.

  • I think Tim has a point. I don't think the best the brightest are only working on "time wasters", but I think what he is driving at is that the best and the brightest need to figure out ways to get more out of the "time wasters".

I think that will come with time. Maybe something like throwing a sheep costs $0.01 that goes to charity or something similar.

  • It is true that you can't just build something and expect it to take off like a rocket. You need to nurture a community in order for it to be successful and grow. You also need to take a different method when you have a super large existing user base like Yahoo, vs. starting a social community from scratch. Either way, community building is an important process that must not be ignored.
