If you don't know your start and stop points, than riding mass transit with the help of mapquest isn't going to make much of a difference.

But if it makes you feel better to flame, be my guest. I won't be giving you another thought

"By offering cost comparisons between public and private transportation, the Google application provides useful information to encourage people to try public transportation. If the application makes it simpler for people to plan trips (thanks to the map interface), they're more likely to travel on public transportation, which can be intimidating to the neophyte.

A lot of people rely on maps for navigation, and their confidence level increases their likelihood of experimenting with public transportation.

Public transit information is absolutely *crucial* to an increase in use. The more and more varied the information, the better."

All of which is provided by Trimet (Portland's mass transist system). Google does no work other than querying mapquest (instead of premade maps) and adding ads.

I have nothing against Google, but this seems redundant. The tools they supply were already in place, but we have this mentality that the Google name means groundbraking tech.

I don't think that by offering public transit information, Google will account for an increase in in it's daily use.

If it does, than at least SOMETHING meaningful would come from it.

  • Google "transit"
Anyone who has ridden Portland TriMet system will know that all Google is doing is feeding you information from Trimet's own web page.

At first, I was surprised to see Portland as Google's test city, but as I read further, I realized they are adding nothing to an already existing system. Except for ads.
