LAS VEGAS--Owners of Seagate's GoFlex TV: I have some exciting news.
Seagate announced today new firmware for the popular network media player to add support for Pandora and a remote control app for the iPhone/iPod Touch.
While the addition of Pandora is great news for music fans, I personally loved the remote control app after briefly playing with it .
Once loaded, the app turns the iPhone's screen into buttons similar to those of the GoFlex TV's original remote control and you can use the phone to control the player via Wi-Fi.
However, unlike the original remote, the app can do a lot more. For example, you can use the phone's onscreen keyboard in case you want to search for content or type in log-in information. This makes using the player much easier as with the remote control, you'd have to fumble with the buttons to enter text.
On top of that, the remote control also has the capability to display the phone's digital photos on the TV screen and essentially back them up on the hard drive of the GoFlex TV. Going forward, this function might even be extended to support videos. This means you can use the iPhone to control the player and use the player to display the phone's content on a big-screen TV.
Seagate says that the new firmware is slated to be released during the first quarter of the year. The remote control application is going through the Apple's vetting process and will be available during the first quarter. In the future, the company also plans on releasing similar apps for the Android-based smartphones.
