We're learning a lot about Verizon's Motorola Droid (with more to come soon), but what do we know about the Droid Eris?

Also called the HTC Desire, the Eris (and the Moto Droid) will be a part of a series of Google Android devices for Verizon Wireless. According to Gdgt, preliminary specs include a 5-megapixel camera, a microSD card slot, EV-DO, a 3.2-inch display, and (thanks to the Boy Genius Report) a 528MHz processor. Official photos are nonexistent at this point, but the Eris should have a HTC Hero-like a trackball for navigation.

Verizon hasn't announced a release date, nor has the carrier even confirmed that the Eris exists. But the clever AndroidGuys got a tip that Verizon employees are receiving Eris training. That makes a rumored November 6 availability quite likely.

The following product mentioned is available.

Actually this phone is coming out November 6th acording to BGR together with the droid which the phone I'm getting, the Eris looked nice but with that old procesor and the 1.5 HTC UI is gonna get cold really fast, It's better to wait for the 2.0 HTC UI with android.

We also know this...

While talk in the past has focused on Windows Mobile or Palm, the biggest topic of conversation at the ninth annual conference in Santa Clara was Google's 1-year-old smart phone operating system, which has become the darling of the mobile development world.

Frenzied programmers tired of the iPhone as well as companies looking for the next big thing are increasingly turning their attention to the new kid on the block and throwing significant resources behind the fledgling platform.

"Now that Android has many more handsets and carriers, it really looks like it will grow big," said Jaime Gonzales, tech director for Buongiorno, a mobile content company. "I think Android will pass the iPhone in users and developers and eventually in the number of applications."

both the droid and the eris look great but the service is whats keeping me away!
ill stay with sprint and my 70 dollar 450min, unlimited cell to cell, unlimited data, txt, pic, video messaging, and free nights and weekends, for all that verizon is 110. This phone is better than the hero in almost every way but the service is the exact opposite!

Umm hate to tell you where you get your facts but even I get 1000 anytime unlimited everything and I pay for 5 phones 1 of which is a blackberry all for 189 a month. I had sprint and it was garbage. I always have service where ever I am even when im in my warehouse where I used to get 1 bar. So id say your alil misleading here with the price but you also get what you pay for and Im all for paying alil bit more for better service and quality

Eris?! What were they thinking? Eris is the Greek goddess of discord and strife. That can't be a good sign.

LOL!
I thought I was the only one who noticed this!

This is how you know that fewer and fewer people paid attention in school, or even READ BOOKS!

Maybe they are trying to say that it will cause strife with the DROID selling in stores offering two great options instead of one great option. Therefore Strife in being forced to pick between the DROID or ERIS.

All I know is that I get signal all the time and everywhere I go with Verizon. I have had excellent service, excellent support and excellent phones. Currently have the LG EnV2. I can do everything with it but I think I want to try the Droid OS. I like the idea of having thousands of Apps available also.
I will never say that I will never leave Verizon, it could happen, but I like what I get and I do not mind paying for services I actually receive.
The Droid will not be perfect to start with but that is what an open system is good at, improving the dang thing. Right?

WOW! i just saw it in person. What a rush! beautiful phone. Man is it fast. The verizon rep just couldn't take it any more. To big of a secret to keep. Played with it for about 45 mins. and it looks like its gonna b a hugh sucess. Rep says that the Eris is nicer to look at, a little thinner because of no keyboard but a little slower. His opinion was no slide out is really needed. I never had 1 all thumbs moment with the droid's virtual keypad. Didn't even bother using the slideout. I hope they put the 2.0 on the Eris.
