Motorola Cliq gets official pricing and release date

Well, how's that for timing? Just after posting a story about Motorola Cliq presales,T-Mobile dropped the official details on pricing and the availability date for the Cliq. Motorola's first Google Android smartphone will be available online and in T-Mobile stores starting November 2 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and qualifying voice and data plan.

Presales will start on October 19 and run through November 1, and devices will be shipped as orders are received. You can register for updates at T-Mobile's Web site.

Now that the questions of availability and pricing are settled, the next question is how well will the Cliq sell? While we'll reserve our final judgment till after we've reviewed the smartphone, I do think the price is a smidge too high. You've got Sprint selling the HTC Hero for $179.99 with a two-year contract, so I would have liked to see the Cliq for the same price, at the very least. What do you guys think?

199 is as much as the 16GB iphone 3GS and more than the HTC Dream or Magic available through Tmo. and from my understanding the Cliq doesn't offer anything revolutionary as far as hardware goes. It was supposed to be an entry level smartphone i figured less than $99. From a marketing standpoint with android phones, its going to take good hardware to justify the price.

That is why I love the android project, it is an open source OS and it levels the playing field for phone manufacturers, and the competition will be in who makes better hardware. We will probably never know how well the iPhone OS works on anything but iPhone hardware, same with Palms WebOS.

Why even talk about prices when the device is available only with qualifying 2-year plans?

We need some type of total cost of ownership comparison from CNET.

Another question. Does running Android makes these systems more "open". Meaning being free from the carrier and manufacture's controls over capabilities and available sofware.

I agree that $199 is high, although im itching to get one partially because i didn't want a 1st generation android phone, and partially because compared to the 26 hour standby time the G1 gets this one claims to have an up to 16day standby time. and unlike the Iphone, its native to T-mobile and has a real keyboard!

It's lame if the data plan is required.

Android phones don't work without data plans.

This will be replacing my iPhone the day it comes out. I cannot wait to replace that shiny little brick of excuses and actually be able to make and hold a phone call!

I'm sorry I don't see this as being high priced. This phone has stereo bluetooth, a real headphone jack, a real keyboard, android, push delivery of email as well as social network information, 6 hour continuous use battery life and up to 13 days stand by time, a clear colorful touchscreen and the ability to locate my phone using GPS and remotely wipe it if I lose it as well as saving all my contacts & information to servers so its easily replaceable. Apple charges $100.00 a year just for those features alone and with the Cliq they are no charge inclusive's!!

I have had my G1 since day 1 and I it has been tank like and has held up to my brutal usage for almost a year. From the reports the Cliq also has solid build quality. The better battery life, increased room for applications & regular headphone jack are just a few of the reasons why I will pre-order this as soon as it becomes available too just like I did my G1. My G1 will then be relegated to my drawer just in case something happens to my shiny new Cliq!

Yes it has alot of features and would have been a reasonable price a year ago. But compared to other componies they are 100 to 150 dollors overpriced. the HTC snap variations are around $60 while tmobile is $169. And the touch pro 2 for $350 is way to much! My contract is up and tmobile should start reconsidering there prices because like me alot of people are going to start leaving to save 100 bucks!

I find this price to be very nice when compared to the iphone with the same price but I get Google email pushed and I get Google contacts and push social networks. One thing I do like is that I can work and play from the same phone! My husband just bought a HTC Touch Pro 2 and it was $350! was going to get that phone but do not like the screen, it takes too much work for the touchscreen maneuvers.
