After playing peek-a-boo for the past few weeks, HTC officially introduced its latest Google Android handset on Tuesday, the HTC Tattoo.

Formerly known as the HTC Click, the Tattoo, we presume, gets it name from the customization options it offers and is being advertised as an Android phone for all. It's the second phone from the company, after the HTC Hero, to use the HTC Sense user interface, which provides up to seven home screen panels that can be personalized with various widgets, shortcuts, and wallpapers.

The phone itself is pretty compact at 4.17 inches tall by 2.17 inches wide by 0.55 inch thick and 3.99 ounces. The HTC Tattoo features a 2.8-inch QVGA resistive touch screen and comes with a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, a microSD expansion slot, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also onboard. Of course, as an Android phone, you get access to Google's various services, including Google Maps, Google Mail, and the Android Market.

The quad-band HTC Tattoo will be available in Europe first (of course), starting at the beginning of October. According to HTC, the smartphone will roll out to the rest of the world in the following months. Pricing was not announced at this time, but we're thinking a sub-$100 price point would be pretty sweet, especially for something that's marketed for such a broad audience.

Pricing is going to be key to any phone running Android if there is to be real iPhone competition. Android apps is another related issue, but they're working on that.

You had me till you mentioned the dreaded word of "RESISTIVE" touch screen.

Well, how else do they get such impressive specs but stay a budget phone? I'd rather have wifi and 3g than capacitive over resistive. It is, after all, a budget phone

What is the real difference between capactive and resistive i know capactive is better but idk what is so great about it

Might be nice to know what networks it runs on!

It's a quad-band GSM phone (850/900/1800/1900) and supports Europe/Asia's 900/2100 MHz HSPA/WCDMA network.

Does the camera have a flash?

Doesn't matter. It's a phone. Cameras in phones are just gimmicks
by M128SF September 9, 2009 11:39 AM PDT
It matters to him obviously, as he's asking for it. Sure, the camera won't be very good as with any (non camera-) phone, but to him it's clearly more than a gimmick.

Anyway, knowing HTC it hasn't got a flash. I don't know of any (recent, anyway) HTC phone to have had a flash so it seems unlikely that some low-end phone will.

Yeah, I know cameras on phones are never great, but I'm not especially picky about my photos. I just think that a flash makes them look a lot better (more clear, in focus, and less grainy... along with the whole being able to shoot in the dark thing). A decent camera on a phone with a flash is definitely adequate for my purposes.

The Touch Pro had a flash. Not sure about any HTCs since then.

uhmmm HTC Hero??....

they are.. except they come to dying networks like Sprint =[
by cardfan1212 September 8, 2009 7:20 PM PDT
It's not the phone price that prevents it for being for all. But the monthly plan.

If you're going to spend the same on a plan to power the iphone, pre, or even Hero as you do this, then why is this one for all?

sprint is dying? they just release tour, pre htc touch 2, bout to release hero, eos. the only reason att is doing good is the iphone-sprint will have 4g out soon and they already beat everyone else in 3rd party tests

MEH... QVGA & resistive touch screen? Maybe if this came out nine months ago. Too bad this came out the same day as the Palm Pixie. It will probably be forgotten by the end of the week

Will the expansion card be limited to 2GB? I haven't seen any reference, so far, to HCSD.
