Podcast tip: Add show notes to your podcast files

I was notified a few months ago of the possibility of adding our extended show notes to the MP3 files that we publish daily. This is something that fans had been asking for in the past and up until then, I thought it was utterly impossible. Well, there is a way. Here's how.

The first thing to keep in mind is that adding show notes to your MP3 file must be the last thing you do to the file before publishing it to the web. If you add show notes to the file and then open it up in an ID3 tag editor other than iTunes, you run the risk of stripping the show notes away without even knowing what you've done. You can always save yourself the headache by using iTunes to edit your ID3 tags as well, eliminating the need to switch programs.

iTunes Lyrics tab

iTunes Lyrics tab

To import the show notes into your MP3 file, first import the file into iTunes. Right-click the podcast file in the iTunes Library and select Get Info. Select the Lyrics tab. Paste your show notes into this window. You might also spend a few minutes formatting the show notes so they look nice. When you are finished, click OK.

That is it, really. It's very simple, but for some reason, not commonly used. You can then publish your podcast to the web as usual, and those with the ability to see information from the lyrics tab will then have full show notes on display. I know that the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch can display these show notes. I've heard from a few others with different smart phones that can see them as well. Happy show-noting!

I was just wondering if you guys could add it to the info section of the ID3 tag, or both, just if you have an iPod, but not the touch or iPhone you can't view it.

I stand to be corrected but on my Nano I can't (1st gen, if the newer ones can then no need, no point doing it for just one listener) Just nice to read the show notes during the show

I have joined C-Net just to say thanks for doing this. I am a 'sort of' long time listener with about 2 plus years as an almost every day listener with BOL being one of my high points of the day. Cheers for everything ...T, M, J.

For anyone who has problems reading the notes, I have always used Media Info http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/ ( I like the 0.7.4.7 version best) for my media file info work and reading the tag information from files because I always have it open somewhere on my desktop.

It's nice that shownotes can be embedded into the podcast. I have noticed a few in my feed list that already do that. However, I implore you, please do not abandon the separately posted shownotes for the embedded. Losing the emailed shownotes was a minor issue, since they're posted here. However pulling links out of the id3 tags would be a nightmare - at least for luddites like me.

We aren't replacing these show notes with those in the MP3 file. It's merely an add-on. :)

Personally, show notes in ID3 tags aren't useful at all to me. I wish there were show notes in the RSS feed rather than just the head summary.

@AdamCasey: Yes, I have the same issue - the lyrics show up in iTunes, but do not make it over to the iPod after syncing. (I have the Nano and the 30GB video). This happens with files that are separated into the podcast section of itunes. I once downloaded a file directly from the BOL website, which meant that I had to manually add it to itunes, but the result was access to the full show notes in the lyrics section on my ipod once I synced. It would be nice to have the podcasts automatically download AND have the show notes.
