A caller wonders what happens to the Chevy Volt if you have the gas in there too long. Does the gas go bad? Well, it could get gummy. And nobody wants gummy gas. or gummi gas either. Not tasty. We also take the SEC conference to task for trying to ban Twitter and photos during their football games. Seriously? Also China got a Dell phone. But will they want it?

Hey guys –

Just in case it’s been a slow news weekend, this press release from Purdue discusses the development of the world’s smallest laser called a “spaser”. This spaser, unlike current lasers, is small enough to be embedded in an electronic chip. In terms of future gadgetry spawning from this development, scientists hinted at consumer electronics using light, instead of electrons, to pass on information as well as “hyperlenses” capable of seeing DNA. On the other side of the spectrum, I imagine we could expect more powerful sensors in digital cameras to take better pictures of Aunt Myrtle too.

Hey Guys,

I know it’s been a while since you last talked about this, but today gizmodo posted a British anti-texting while driving ad to be shown around the country, especially in schools. Though gruesome and horrifying, I think it’s the only effective way to show the prevalence of this phenomena and the ease with which people can lose their lives and threaten the lives of others. What do you think about it ?

Here is the link to the full story :

Love the show and keep up the great work.

Hi Buzz Crew,

On yesterday's show (BOL 1041) you were talking about the total flex fuel and I can guarantee that this is an excellent option. Here in Brazil the sugarcane biofuel cars exits since the 80's and my father had one whem I was a kid. Now I have a 2007 Volkswagen Gol that is total flex (using gasoline and biofuel) and I only used gas two times since it's buying. The car works great, the biofuel price is lower than gas and great car companies like Ford, Renault, GM and Honda sell total flex cars here. I don't understand why it is so difficult for this technology to get in the US.

Just sharing the way things are going here. Love the show

Bleh, no knowledge of the Chinese mobile market. The Wi-Fi's not included because of governement regulations and mandates. The 3G isn't pervasive at all, and the rollout is just beginning to start. The 2G phone may not be as tech-heavy as the iPhone, but it's the right move to meet the demands of nearly 1 billion potential Chinese subscribers.

She must be drinking every episode. I guess the rationale of a one time price of $100 for a GPS app that works versus $9.99 month after month for a GPS app that kinda works just doesn't compute. Molly doesn't have much to complain about the TomTom app anyway since she's on T-mobile lol

Thanks for the info about digsby stealing cpu cycles on friday, pretty sneaky and lame.

They reacted quickly to the backlash, and even asked for suggestions on a revenue model. I guess i forgive them.

From friday's blog post at:
http://blog.digsby.com/

Lack of Information

While the installer is quite obvious since you use it to install Digsby, the Research Module is not obvious to new users. An article describing these revenue models was published yesterday on LifeHacker and most of the people commenting on the article did not know about it since they don?t follow our blog and don?t read the Terms of Service shown in the installer.

We are pushing out a release later today that will include the following changes:

* We are moving the entire ?Support Digsby? section out of the ?Help? menu and into the preferences window so the option to enable/disable the research module is easier to find

* Digsby will show a popup notification telling you about the module with a ?Learn More? button which links to a page describing it in detail including instructions for how to enable/disable it. The popup will be ?sticky? so it will not disappear until you click ?Learn More? or ?Close? to ensure that users don?t accidentally miss it.

We want to make it completely clear to all users so Digsby is not doing anything you don?t want it to do. The above changes have been on our to do list but the article really opened our eyes about how few people know about this functionality. Our goal is to create the world?s best IM client and social media tool. The only way to accomplish that goal is with transparency and communication so we can keep working with you to make a better product.

I recently switched TO AOL because they are the only e-mail provider I could find that supports the COMPLETE IMAP implementation and have "unlimited" storage space. Gmail was OK, but when linking it to desktop applications (think: offline e-mail, no clumsy google gears implementation) and many mobile phones, it's broken IMAP implementation leaves archived and sent messages in the INBOX. AOL is the best choice for users who want to choose their e-mail application, who like to use e-mail offline, and who only check their e-mail over the web as a backup for their REAL desktop applications.

(love the show)

The reason why there are so many active users on Hotmail is because Microsoft makes it extremely difficult to move somewhere else. There is no IMAP or POP3 access so you cant forward your email to another address, no support for chrome or safari, you can't easily export your contacts without a mail client. Microsoft is just hanging on to as many users as they possibly can because, quite frankly, there are much better services out there but its incredibly difficult to switch. Its like the song Hotel California by the Eagles. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave." Just my two cents. Feel free to chew on that food for thought. Love the Show. - J

pop3 for hotmail exists.
by demonjrules August 18, 2009 3:54 PM PDT
Well luckily I got out of Hotmail's evil black hole a while ago, so POP3 never existed. This still doesn't change the fact that Hotmail is very difficult to get yourself out of.

Gas does not degrade, it evaporates and leaves behind the additive packs, like Shell's "Invigorate". That's the gumminess that is left behind. Also lots of gas has some amount of alcohol in it depending on where you live. Alcohol will absorb water. All modern gasoline fuel injected systems have a fuel return line back to the tank, for the excess fuel so the fuel will get circulated in the tank. And I cant see them putting a very large fuel tank on the volt.

I am so happy that the SEC is cracking down on tweeting from games. I want them to also do this in the ACC. That should take care of all the friends of mine who spend all their time at the game tweeting. If I wanted to go to the game, I'd buy a ticket or watch or even listen to the radio. I have no desire to see every play come across my twitter feed. I've been having to use twitterpause.com to stop following certain friends every game day.

If CBS sports wants help enforcing this to report those who are tweeting, they need to give us a number to report infractions.

Next, we need to take care of those pesky NASCAR fans.....

switchgrass and sucarcane don't yield high enough crop returns to make them a viable source for biofuel in the U.S. They are highly seasonal and dependent upon climate. I believe sugarcane is the temperamental of the two.

The SEC also has an policy against artificial noisemakers, but that doesn't stop Mississippi State University fans from bringing cowbells to the game. Some get taken away, but I really don't see them taking people's phones away.

Molly is right, the British film can have an impact about texting & driving. In my day the push was to wear a seatbelt . As a young teenager, my school showed a film just like you were describing and I still remember it vividly today. The officer described the grusome details of a late night car crash where no seatbelts were worn. He gave every detail about how this one teenager died at the scene after she flew through the windshield. He even described the trauma of informing the parents. I hope they start to use a film like the British have in all schools in America.
