Buzz Out Loud 1001: All your Face Page accounts are belong to us

by Tom Merritt

Bozeman, Montana, has decided they need everyone's social network log-ins and passwords to conduct background checks on prospective employees. So cute. They call it Face Page. Plus we talk about the iPhone lines, and go to town on the need for copyright laws. Turns out we may not need them.

Dear buzz crew:
This is Siavash from Iran, I'm happy to report that in past few days the internet speed on ADSL lines is better and we can access the sites better, but our fight against the government still continues.
After Twitter support for Iran, today Facebook added Persian language to their languages and now Persian can use the Facebook in Persian. I know Google is going to do some changes in their service for Iran too.
I'm just amazed for the amount of support of American sites for Iranian users and their attention to Iran. And I just wanted to thank them all.
I want to add a BiG BiG thank you to all buzz town citizens that sent me mails and Facebook messages and you guys on Cnet for reading my mail and paying attention to what is going on here.

THANK YOU

PS: Natali, I'm still the only Persian listener in Tehran, I have found other Persian listeners around the world, but not in Tehran

Best Regards

Siavash Ghahremany

Hey Buzzheads,

I took a couple screengrabs when the chatroom went over 1000 users. One shows gknee smiling as we hit 1001, and the other is Molly conveniently toasting when we hit 1013. Both pics are in my flickr account. Here’s 1013 and here’s 1001. Hope you like them, and I love the show!

Is there any chance that the $1.92 Million dollar claime against Jammie could open peoples eyes
to the possibble value of something like Qtrax which refuses to die just yet?

According to a recent corporate update:

"Official Global Launch
Qtrax will officially launch in the United States and in at least 6 other countries with version 1.01 on July 22nd, 2009."

I?m really trying to get my head around some of these quotes:

?Some hit songs when they get to file sharing networks don?t get downloaded until the record companies start promoting them??

Really. Hit music doesn?t sell until it?s marketed? Wow. That would just confirm a billion years of record industry rules there, eh?

?The reason that people make art is not for money??

*Pop* That?s your bubble world, Rafe, coming to an end where artist produce because of a burning desire to change the world. I?m sorry, but the idea that people do not produce art in order to generate income has to be news to every rock band, painter, sculptor, and writer who has ever published, shown in a gallery, or played a venue that was 100 miles away from their hometown.

?We don?t need copyright law.? ?Oh, I would back it all the way out.?

You want to unilaterally remove all copyright protections? Seriously? You trust big business not to steal any ideas that some poor schmuck has put to paper or shopped for years? Does baby and bath water mean anything here?

?Everyone knows that copyright law only exists to protect business models.?

Then why isn?t it proprietary to business? Why is it that you have the right to copyright materials with protective guidelines that apply? Copyright is available to some poor dude on the street who is attempting to maintain the integrity of his original idea from those who would willfully steal it and then use it for themselves.

?How are people going to make money?? ?Do they need to? Why??

Do you hear how arrogant and self-serving this is? Nothing in the world could sound more ridiculous.

?Didn?t traveling minstrels just going along and exchange songs for food and shelter??

Ok, Molly. That was a topper. (BTW: Is Molly advocating the barter system? Seriously? How many pelts do they pay you there at CNET?)

?The idea that you have to create some artificial welfare system for the creative among us is just ridiculous.?

So when an artist creates something and then sells it, that is welfare? Or is it just when the artist creates something and uses the legal system to prevent someone else from stealing the idea while it is in its infancy. Or are you implying that it is audacious for an artist to be paid for his/her work?

?And if people want to buy your stuff, why you do you need a copyright. They just buy it.?

Did Rafe just tell us that artists don?t produce for financial reasons? I can?t tell whether artists are so supposed to be inherently altruistic or artists are supposed to be devoid of any personal vestment regarding his/her work? Are they soulful or souless?

You guys are brilliant in so many areas which is why I?m surprised that you over-simplified a complicated issue completely. I would say you are being naive, but I know that all of you are creative and understand the significance of a piece of art to an individual creator. Maybe you don't hear how flippant you are because you are trying so hard to side with the individuals who file-share? Maybe I missed some qualifier somewhere. Please clarify.

On the issue of Jammie's file sharing case, maybe I'm being cynical but won't it be to the advantage of Jammie's lawyers to have the jury be as ignorant of technology and personal freedoms as possible for the ultimate appeal? The Chief Justice is noted to be pro-business so one way to win the case might be to have the case as presented to the Supreme Court so crazy, so obviously un-Constitutional that even the conservative members have to rule against the RIAA. Both sides get a chop on the jury so if the RIAA picks a 70 year old grandmother that still listens to music on LPs, Jammie's lawyers might pick a 80 year old great-grandfather who constantly calls the police to get those kids off his lawn. Maybe Jammie's lawyers want the rate to be $1 million dollars per song by the time it reaches the Supreme Court.

If the music is sold, then it is a product the same as spark plugs, pens and coffee mugs. Spark plugs, however, are very difficult for the average Joe to copy and pass on to friends. It is very easy for the average Joe to copy a CD and pass it on to millions of people with no money going to those who produced it. When this happens, the producers of the CD get mad and try to stop them. When consumers stop the copying, then the producers will stop getting mad.
