Buzz Out Loud 942: Fill up on Confickerdoodles
A new scanner developed by Kaminsky and friends can help find Conficker-infected machines. We're so drenched in Conficker news at this point that I think the Girl Scouts have started selling Confickerdoodles. We also analyze Netflix's Blu-ray-rate hike, and try to decide why they're fighting over toilets in space.

It seems to me and to many others who listen to the show that Natali Del Conte is quick to stereotype and judge all those who live between the two coasts of the United States. She has made disparaging remarks about the southern states, rural areas and, most recently, even the viewers of ‘The Family Guy’. I don’t watch the show and I have no idea what the target demographic is, but she implied that they would be the most likely to still have analog TVs, a condition that seems to be a mark of shame in her world. Not only is this assumption probably wrong, it is what Christopher Hitchens calls poor comedy: “jokes that
only stupid people laugh at”.
Furthermore, I can’t help but think that Natali’s cute face and ability to turn her head to the right angle for a photograph is the only reason she has a job in tech journalism. I’m sure her looks have granted her many a door opening that would otherwise have been closed. Who’s judging now? You know what it’s like, Natali. I don’t expect this to be read on the air, but that is your decision.
I continue to listen to the show and except for the occasional inane
comment, I enjoy it immensely. Thank you.

Hey Buzz Crew,
Regarding Vicente’s email in episode 941 and previous emails about the E74 error. I can, in fact, confirm that there is not conspiracy that the E74 error and RRoD are the same error that was just changed in the NXE update. You see, I have had BOTH errors in my short 2 years of owning an XBox 360. I got the E74 error last year and then, about 2 days after updating to NXE, I got the RRoD. Thankfully, I got then in that order so that it was covered by my regular warrantee for E74 and the extended RRoD warrantee later.
Love the show,
Dan from Wisconsin

Hey Buzz Crew,
I know you guys have a big hate on for my preferred mobile OS, but you forgot to mention that Windows Mobile has supported Skype for years now. And guess what? It runs on either WiFi or cellular data connections and can be minimized and run in the background!
…but I guess the fact that the iPhone has just come out with a limited functionality version of Skype is the big news
…love the show!

Hey Buzz crew,
I was watching the (unintentionally) funny 60minutes “The INterwbehszor iz ze inFECTED”
episode and like many other finns (tho I live in Sweden) noticed the “hacker hunters” lack
of knowledge about his “enemy”.
At about 10:46 of this video: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4901282n
They show a picture of what they claim is a russian hacker group and even point to one
saying this guy is called Tempest etc.
Little does he know he has just been pwned by a Finnish internet joke and that the picture
is about 5 years old.
This picture was originally used as part of an internet joke called Isän Maan Puollustajat:
http://www.pelulamu.net/viznut/web/isanmaa/
Basicly the picture was taken from IRC-Galleria (http://irc-galleria.net/index.php) and then
added to a page with a lot of badly writen neo-nazi huff and buff and has been online for
at least 5 years. The guys in the picture were neo-nazis, but have apparently given that
up once they grew up.
As a funny coincidence the name Tempest is the name of a finnish demoscener whose
work was stolen by Timbaland (judge yourself based on the evidence, I believe it tho,
Timbaland is a waste of air if you ask me), the same guy who came up with the joke was
also collecting material for Tempest vs. Timbaland: http://www.pelulamu.net/timbaland/
So, maybe CBS should do a bit more fact checking on who they have on as their “experts”.
There is a lot of Finns laughing at 60minutes right now and this “news” is actually been
picked up by a lot of the mainstream media as well.
Just thought I let you know, maybe you at least get a good laugh out of it, I know finland has
Love the show as they all seem to say.

Tom Merritt appears on
CNET TV, specializing in help and how-to and the ever popular Top 5
lists. He also co-hosts CNET's The Real Deal podcast.
Jason Howell can
often be found producing Buzz Out Loud from the audio studios at CNET,
updating XML feeds from the comfort of his cubicle, and saying "uh-oh"
from time to time.

Natalie, Matthew's acting like a jerk with a nasty attitude and he doesn't deserve another moment of your time.
If you want to be a jerk, go do it somewhere else. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.
For the record, I know that small towns can be backwards and boring....just as I know that a pretty face can open some doors. Neither of which means that all pretty girls succeed only because of their looks, or that everyone in small towns are morons.
For my part, keep on with the regionists comments, it keeps my commute and housing costs reasonable.
Do your homework, Natalie. This is a show where a voice coach and a personal trainer won't help you.
I would like to ask you a simple question: Really?
Are you really offended by Natali's innocuous comments, which were made as a joke?
I find it hard to take your comments seriously, in fact, I suspect you are one of the *very* small number of morons who have been throwing a nerd tantrum here on the BOL forums, and writing your little nasty comments in e-mails, taking every opportunity to attack Natali, because your little nerd crushes got stomped when Molly chose to step back.
In fact, after reading your little tantrum again, I have to laugh. I'm sure the people who made the decision to bring Natali in looked at her resume, her professional training, her two degrees, her experience with tech journalism, and most importantly the chemistry she clearly has with Tom and Jason, and oh yeah, she's attractive. OH NOES, she's so wrong for the job!
Funny, you and the other little haters running around the forums and here in the comments making your snarky little comments never had a problem with Veronica being cute, or Molly. Odd, that. Both of them made much, much worse comments -in jest - than Natali has (in jest as well), but curiously, you were silent then.
Get over it, Matthew. Find another podcast to listen to, your childish behavior is not welcome, and quite frankly, we won't miss you. We know what you're trying to do. It won't work.
I'm sorry you have all of those wierd feelings you can't handle, ever since Molly announced she was stepping back. I'm sorry your nerd crush is keeping you from enjoying the show, which is as good as always. But seriously? You never had a shot with Molly. She's happily married - and she chose to step back. (And I'm sure had a big part in the decision to bring in Natali).
In fact, I'm going to close this in the estimable and wise words of Molly Wood herself:
Matthew: Suck it.
Sincerely,
Gadzooks, and the BOL chat room.
In terms of constructive criticism I would like to say that Natali has to own up to a joke especially if it falls flat as otherwise people think that she is been serious, which could be a reason for the misunderstanding from Matthew. Can I also state that I have noticed there been more "low brow' humour in BOL, which might be something Natali is bringing to the show or it could be a management decision, but I for one don't appreciate it. Previously the show had humour that did not have to go to the level of "urine nation".
I do love the show and I do enjoy Natali's smiling voice coming through my Podcast of indeterminate length.
Enjoy

Whether they mean it or not, it comes out as a slam for those of us who don't jet between NY and CA or don't have the access or the priviledge to enjoy the finer things in life.
In the end, I think Matthew's comments were a bit strong, but I think his point was valid. This show as a listener base that extends beyond the world you live in. If you plan on being a fixture in the press Natalie, I don't think you should publicly acknowledge things like this other than to just apologize for the comment and move on. You have bright career ahead of you and things like this are going happen all the time.

Is it really just we cover it because we want to be cool?
I don't know what kind of schools you went to, but I haven't been able to cite an encyclopedia of any kind since I was in, like, elementary school. In university I was required to use primary and secondary sources for my research papers. Encyclopedias are generally considered tertiary sources. But, like Jason was saying, Wikipedia and other encyclopedias are good starting places when doing research on a new topic. Also, I recall a study a while ago that indicated that Wikipedia was only slightly less reliable than the Encyclopedia Britannica, but that it was much more comprehensive. The Encyclopedia Britannica uses paid researchers/writers whereas we all know that Wikipedia uses volunteer contributors. Hey, I found this link at CNET of all places, http://news.cnet.com/Study-Wikipedia-as-accurate-as-Britannica/2100-1038_3-5997332.html
Hey, Brian, don't want to nitpick, but your fist has mass in space--it doesn't have weight.
And, Natali, as a Californian now living in the Midwest, I too didn't appreciate the "flyover states" comment. I think these kinds of comments contribute to the perception that people on the coasts are arrogant snobs. But, I'm glad you're on the show, hang in there, and put on some rhino skin--that whole entertainment world is a nasty place. Glad its you and not m

Showing 1 of 2 pages (45 Comments)I have been a longtime listener of BOL since about episode 80. I never call in or write emails, but truthfully, you do often make disparaging remarks about middle America and the South. You speak of your own broken spirit, but have you considered that you get so many complaints because your offensive remarks have a similar effect on those to whom they are directed? It is not "sexist" to point out that you made a mistake. You are compounding the error by not performing an honest self-examination, going back and listening to your many comments that there have been on the podcast and owning up to the fact that perhaps your world view is neither correct nor the only one out there. Rather, you are lashing out indiscriminately to all who have been injured by your own comments. That's hardly fair.
While I do not live in a "flyover state" (how demeaning a term!), I am from the South and there have been several comments that can only be interpreted as sectionalist, divisive and condescending.
As for your spirit, no one is trying to "break" you. We are asking you to recognize that as you broadcast from New York and routinely fly over the rest of us, you are still one of us.... and you don't have an inherent right to use your position to break our spirits.
All the talk of you getting the job based on your appearance, that is just so much garbage and I will not even address it.
Best of luck on the show and I look forward to seeing a change that I belive you are fuly capable of.
