Seinfeld is a traitor!
How the MPAA ruined jury duty for me
Hey buzz crew -
This week I have the “honor” of serving my fellow citizens as supreme
judge and executioner of their fate.
In the past, while waiting to send someone to spend the rest of their
life in the loving hands of their cell mate Duke, we got to watch a DVD
brought in by one of our faithful civic employees.
This year apparently , the MPAA, required that they cease and desist
this practise. Can you believe that!!
So now instead of killing time watching “Muppets take Manhatten” I have
to sit idly, occaisionally reminding sir sits too close what personal
space means… Ugh
Love the show.

Hey Buzz Crew,
In episode 793 you discussed Facebook’s new advertising system
and made a joke about how it doesn’t refer to wedding bells style
engagement. I must say, that joke hit almost uncomfortably close to
home. Many times, my amazing girlfriend of a year and a half has
received targeted Facbook ads for diamond rings, and she has mentioned
them to me upon occasion. While I’m not opposed to engagement, it’s not
in my immediate plans. I am starting to fear Facebook’s continued and
more specific targeting.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I’m excited to have my first well actually. I know its Harry Potter
related and not really technologically based, but Molly is right. I
have a relative who has worked on all the previous Harry Potter films
and is in production on the newest movie. They had an emergency meeting
recently to discuss moving the next Harry Potter movie back to Summer
‘09. The reasoning is that because of the writer’s strike they had a
huge gap in content next summer, which will be filled by Harry Potter
(insert Equis jokes here).
Love the show!

Hey Tom Molly Jason and maybe Albert or who evers there
On Episode 792 you guys talked about Muxtape being shutdown by the RIAA
because they didn’t pay royalty fees to allow users to upload music and
stream it to friends .So does this mean that the RIAA can also shutdown
Pownce because Pownce allows user to upload files like mp3’s; and in a
way stream them to friends. i don’t think Kevin Rose pays royalty
fees. I hope they don’t shutdown Pownce. Whats our take.
Example of Pownce mp3 upload

Dear Tom ‘n Jolly (and Albert?),
Please import Wil Harris and make him a permanent part of the show.
Greatly appreciated,
Randy
As host of the Buzz Report video series, Molly provides a fresh and funny perspective on the latest consumer electronic products to hit the market, as well as commentary on the stories and development that she thinks are truly buzz-worthy. She is also co-host of Buzz Out Loud, CNET's "podcast of indeterminate length," which entertains listeners with a funny and skeptical take on the day's technology news. Her other podcast, Gadgettes, is proof that girls can be geeks too.

Tom Merritt appears on
CNET TV, specializing in help and how-to and the ever popular Top 5
lists. He also co-hosts CNET's The Real Deal podcast.
Jason Howell can
often be found producing Buzz Out Loud from the audio studios at CNET,
updating XML feeds from the comfort of his cubicle, and saying "uh-oh"
from time to time.

On show 794 you were talking about how the Japanese e-wallet mobile phones wouldn't work in the US because the cell networks couldn't handle it and you might not want financial info linked to your mobile account like that. Well actually (I hate myself for saying that) the e-wallet system here in Japan is just an RFID chip embedded in the handset, and is independent of the cellular network and your mobile account itself. You charge it with as much cash as you need either online by credit card, or with machines placed around town. Anyone who picks up your phone will only have access to the amount you put in there, just like a real wallet.
Having said all that, i don't use that feature on my phone, for the simple reason that when I go to a bar or restaurant I slap my phone down on the table in front of me -- something I'd never do with a wallet full of actual cash. There are plastic cards with the same RFID in them which are much easier to whip out.
Love the show!
In past shows (including this one) you discussed the possible reasons for Warner Bros. recent decision to move the next Harry Potter release date to July of 2009. Nobody has mentioned the HUGE success of the Dark Knight (also a Warner Bros. property) on the same July weekend in 2008. Could that have been the reason for the big move? I'm thinkin' so!
Thanks!

(3 Comments)1. With VHS and DVD while certainly some companies benefitted from being on the right "side" but you didn't generally hear XYZ Corp's VHS or ABC Co's DVD format. Yet you always hear "Sony" in conjunction with Blu-Ray. Thanks to things like Sony's bad history of proprietary locking down, Sony-BMG's involvement with the RIAA, and so on, I think Sony makes some people leery.
2. When DVDs first appeared they were actually cheaper than the VHS equivalent as the companies attempted to get people to adopt the format. This is not true this time around. The players are more expensive, the disks are more expensive, and with little else very compelling, why bother until it gets cheaper.
3. You can blame DVDs for people's skepticism about Blu-Ray "extras." If you think back there was so much "promise" about DVDs. Movies that you would be able to view at different angles, etc. My first DVD player (which I still have) has a giant remote control for camera angles and other such features) None of which ever came to fruition (except perhaps choosing between Wide Screen and Full Screen on a single disk). So why would we as consumers believe that "this time" those extra features will ever be fulfilled (unless they find a way to fit in more advertising, etc).
4. Even if you did consider buying a Blu-Ray right after the "war" ended... suddenly the price of the players went up, making some people feel as if they were being taken advantage of, which in no way helps the mis-trust mentioned for Sony and the games they like to play.
5. Did I mention that Sony's name and the lack of trust that it inspires?
