Keep your smoking clean with E-Cigarette

Personally, I am very much against smoking, possibly more than I should be for my own good.

However, having known many smokers in my life, I also understand that smoking is probably the hardest, among human being's bad habits, to get rid off. And in the meantime, when you smoke, you're harming your health and that of those around you, while smelling really bad. There I go again!

The point is you hate to see your dad smoke his life away but you wouldn't want to see him suffer when he needs a fix, either. So how about getting him a pack of electronic cigarette?

This is what Smoking Everywhere offers. Allegedly, its product looks like a cigarette, tastes like a cigarette, feels like a cigarette, but it isn't a cigarette. It contains no tobacco, and the "smoke" is vapor. For this reason, it can be used indoor at public places where regular smoking is banned.

The E-Cigarette does contain, however, the substance that makes you addicted and therefore the main reason why you keep smoking: Nicotine. Basically, the E-Cigarette offers a real smoking experience without any of the unpleasant side-effects of traditional tobacco smoking.

According to Smoking Everywhere, as you inhale the E-Cigarette, a tiny battery vaporizes liquid inside the cigarette to produce the smoke-like vapor. At the same time, the Nicotine cartridge will release nicotine to satisfy the withdrawal.

Depending on how heavy of a smoker you are, you can choose between three options of Nicotine cartridges: High (16mg), Medium (11mg) and Low (6mg). For those who like smoking just for the act of smoking, they can pick the None (0mg) cartridge. You can also choose from different flavors, just like in real cigarettes.

A Smoking Every E-Cigarete Kit costs $149 and includes two Electric Cigarette rechargeable batteries, five high-strength (16mg) tobacco flavored cartridges, a main charger adapter, a power lead and a manual. It also comes with a one-year warranty.

It's important to note that, when you smoke the E-Cigarette, the tip of the cigarette also light up, not by flame but via an LED. The cigarette, for this reason will not produce ash or get shorter. Each cartridge is equivalent to about 20 real cigarettes.

I don't smoke and therefore don't know how different the E-Cigarette is from a real one. You can check out some real experience here. I do believe, however, this is a good way for you to slowly quit.

Though different from the real cigarette in many ways, the E-Cigarette has one thing in common: you will not be able to return it once you have smoked it.

I have a guy I work with that has tried these solutions and they smell worse than actual smoke.

Nasty and expensive.

I found them to be very inexpensive actually at least invisismoke.com has them really cheap.
by bmn_1213 February 18, 2009 9:33 AM PST
I call fake on this. I've had a dozen and nobody has been able to smell them.
by DrBoyde February 22, 2009 10:17 PM PST
The reason is because technology is just now creating the better product. From a smoker that quit after 20 years, I tried them all. There is one company that is giving 100% of any profits made in 2009 to charity. They are the only one in the US that has the real size and sell you the liquid so you do not have to buy their expensive cartridges. That?s how the other companies get you. Try this one. I heard it tastes better and is about 25 or so less for the kit. Also the cartridges are about half the price if you continue to use it. smokeanywherellc

I bought my electronic cigarette kit a week ago and this was the best stop smoking aid that i have ever tried. I have used Chanix, patches, gum, etc, and nothing has worked. I have yet to smoke a cigarette since i purchased the electronic cigarette. As far as an odor, there is no odor and as far as being expensive, how expensive is it to possibly save your life from lung cancer and other illness that can be associated with smoking. I used the different levels of nicotine that come with the kit and i am now using the 0 level filter with no craving for a real cigarette whatsoever. If you have tried every stop-smoking aid on the market and feel like you cant do it, please give this alternative a try, for me it was worth every dollar i spent.

You'd look kind of silly with this thing, but then again I never understood the appeal of smoking to begin with.

This is a pretty stupid idea ... and if the establishment that a person is in doesn't allow smoking to begin with, why would they want to accommodate this. Why not just quit ... smoking is a filthy, disgusting, harmful, addiction. It not only harms the people who do it, it can harm anyone who is nearby!

Can anyone say, 'holier-than-thou'? Addiction happens, if this helps some people kick the habit how can you possibly be against it?
by bmn_1213 February 18, 2009 9:35 AM PST
What a thoughtless comment. The article isn't about smoking tobacco so why reply about it? Your comments are in fact more reason to support a product that isn't filthy or harmful, to either the user or those nearby. Your priggishness trumps your comprehension.
by usa-gold February 19, 2009 4:19 AM PST
justamoment1, your comments are not just "pretty stupid" they are completely stupid. When you comment about something you know nothing about, you just show off your ignorance. Electronic cigarettes have no oder, have no harmful effects for the user or those around them, do not produce any by-product such as ash or filters and allow users to stop using a harmful product. Yet you call it stupid. It's people like you who should be required to have an intelligence test prior to voting. If that happened, you would never vote again.
by mrsmed March 15, 2009 11:30 PM PDT
I rarely read through many of the comments after articles like this, and it's even more rare that I post myself, but this close-minded meatbag inspired me to respond.... you obviously have neither the will nor the empathy to wrap your mind around the concept of addiction. Do you think that kids look at all the health risks they teach us about in grade school, then say "screw it", and go out and pick up a cigarette/bottle/crack pipe? As previously stated, addictions happen.... I'm 28 and have been smoking for 14 years. I KNOW that smoking is a "filthy, disgusting, harmful, addiction." Worst off all, I will put the ones I love in pain when they have to see me dying of cancer in the hospital 30 years from now when they are perfectly healthy except for some arthritis and a few hemorrhoids. Does all this effor t to make a fake cigarette seem silly to a non-smoker? No. It seems absolutley, positively, stupendously rediculous. ***? Why go to so much trouble to make an artificial cigarette for some loser that doesn't have the willpower to just realize that cigs are bad and simply quit? Well, if that question sounded totally rational to you then you don't want to understand what it is to be a smoker, and you certainly don't understand addiction. Don't judge, understand. It will make you far more effective the next time you try and convince someone of the evils of smoking (which you are completely right about) rather than just coming off as a total ******. I haven't bought one of these wacky things, but I'm thinking about it. If it really is safe, and it helps ONE person not die of smoking related cancer like my own grandma did, then why not at least allow that this product has potential for good?. I hope, for my kids' sake that you are young, so that you are still malleable enough to start thinking in terms of helping the "addict" rather tham writing them off.... I would hate to think that you are passing this dogmatic crap on to others rather than trying to really help. As a smoker I would be the first to say "burn all the tobacco companies to the ground". They sell death. I know this. If you can still understand me ponying up 6 bucks for a pack every time I'm at the gas station, then you understand the irrationality that is addiction.... and then you can help. Thanks for the non-smoker perspective!

~Matt

To be fair, downsides:
-E-cigarettes have "flavors". I think I know who the "flavors" are marketed at....future customers (i.e. kids)

-untested drug effects. No one I have heard of knows the long term effects of JUST nicotine, or how effective/consistent/accurate this type of nicotine delivery system is. For the sake of smokers and second-hand victims around the world, i hope future lab tests prove favorable.
by bbb0424 October 29, 2009 9:02 PM PDT
Wow, you have it all figured out, maybe you should sell your idea to all the smokers in the world trying to quit. It sounds like a great method !
by lyingfriar February 17, 2009 1:52 PM PST
There's a product out there similar to this that is half the price.

http://www.njoythefreedom.com

This is how all cigarettes should be. I don't understand why they make cigarettes so dangerous when they can make them very safe... and then more people would buy them!

As someone who pleasure smokes - fine cigars, hookahs, cloves, etc. - I think these are pointless. Non-smokers and anti-smokers still hate them, you can't smoke them indoors, by law, in most states (which is supposedly a big selling point for these), and they don't have the same flavor as regular tobacco.

In general though, I think the outcry against smokers, especially in urban areas is really starting to infringe on people's rights. Designated smoking areas, I can totally see the need for. Not smoking within 20-25 feet of a public entrance to a building, sure. Now the anti-smoking contingent (with the help of the government) are looking to get smoking banned in entire city limits. Giving smokers no refuge at all is a total rights infringement and totally unwarranted.

"Giving smokers no refuge at all is a total rights infringement"

Last time I checked, there was nothing in the Bill of Rights for a person to have the right to smoke.

That said, what you do in your own space (house, land, car) is your choice, but if it is a shared space, the game changes.

I like loud music...really loud music, but out of respect for people around me (and various laws), I only do this in my personal spaces.

It's the same basic concept.
by bmn_1213 February 18, 2009 9:38 AM PST
"you can't smoke them indoors, by law, in most states " - not true. Public health depts and law enforcement in numerous states have noted that they do not violate smoking bans, which cover ignited tobacco, which these are not.

"they don't have the same flavor as regular tobacco" - not true. They have many tobacco flavorings which are very close to common tobacco brands, in addition to other flavors.

I have to comment here.. i WAS a smoker.. I to enjoyed a nice Hooka, and esp Clove cigarettes. the cloves a bit to much so.
I have an E-cig and true its not a clove. it hasnt the Hooka effect which i still use. BUT that being said, It has allowed me to no longer smell like a clove, or cigartte. Nor does my home smell as one. My clothes stay fresh, my car is clean, my freinds dont shy away, and i save a ton of money! Oh and my health insurance can go down bescuse im no LONGER a smoker perhaps?
The E-cig has been a blessing. i can breath better, smell the world around mebetter, taste foods so much cleaner now. I will say that there is a transistion period from the physcological addition of actually smoking to using one. but short lived. It has no fire, no ash, no more holes in shirts or pants from fallen hot ash. its a win win in my book.
while true i still have an addiction to Nicotine, its waning slowly as i reduce the amount used and enjoy the sensation and for me, a cesation.
If we're to worry of the addiction of Nicotine, lets also worry of the caffine in coffee, which is a drug as well and listed as such, that many have to have? That we supply children of many ages world wide? start your day each day with no coffee or that coke for that kick start. As to its addictive or not? its undecided and argued, but its effects are many, and its costs huge.
Lets remove alcohol world wide and the addiction it has over many. Do you want silly looking? watch someone who has had to many drinks... thats not just silly but sad.
There are many many arguements one can make pro and con. A silly E-cig to many, a blessing to others. To date i have lost count of those i know who quit nicotine totay by using an E-cig. its not sold as a stop smioking device, yet many have over come nicotines grasp by using them.
BUT to the nay sayers of thier validity, appearance and use? lets not have Electronic Cigarettes in favor of tobacco based items... that do smell... that do contain up to 4000 chemicals, many which are toxins, poisons and carcenigens.. whats 400,000 deaths annualy attributed and associated to the use of tobacco based cigarettes and products.
Or be it that smoking cigarettes a new, twisted sadistic form of population control? or... a tobacco lobbiest has made someones life, in a posistion of power somuch more "comfortable?
me parinoid? NOoooo not me...

I'd use one: my girlfriend has one of these - it's merely a means for her to deal with the oppressive rules that abound these days. "Oh no, you cannot have a smoking carriage on the train, or a smokers' room etc."

As far as I am concerned all this ghastly restriction has resulted in the end of the availability of a cigarette for connoisseurs.

There is no constitutional right to drink, eat, sleep, but you do. There is a constitutional right for the Pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Perhaps your happiness is a myth as well.
by MadLyb February 17, 2009 3:25 PM PST
@ChrisJCH

There are limits on where you can drink, eat and sleep as well. It is about personal responsibility and respect for people around you.
by mrsmed March 16, 2009 12:25 AM PDT
In the words of te inimitable Dan Carlin, my right to "swing my fists ends where the other man's nose begins." You can talk about rights, priveleges, and pursuits all you want, but your right to rights explicitly ends where the other man's nose begins. The basic precepts of the constitution and the associated amendments are very specific in their relevance to the individual.... so yes, you should say f$%k you to anyone who tells you that you don't have hte right to smoke/drink/anything else you want to do. At the same time, no non-smoker should have to put up with our smoke (yes, i'm a smoker and enjoy it) in ANY public place....any place they might take their children. That's only fair. Finally, we know the real riskes, so we should concentrate on curbing the rate of uptake among teenagers and moving adults to teach their children healthier habits.

Truly an amazing device !! I hope that it helps take the cigarette companys out of business. Athe problem here is that smoking everywhere and njoy's prices are way to high. I found a great place that has stores in malls and a great website www.thesafecig.com the sell the best electronic cigarette on the market. check them out if you have a sec

Trust me, not only do you want to stay away from Smoking Everywhere & NJoy for being over priced and poor performers, you want to stay away from TheSafeCig.com as well. Not only are they guilty of inflated prices and crappy products, but they have the nerve to put up a billboard in Philidelphia calling out our President for being a filthy smoker too. Boycott TheSafeCig.com!!!
by unix77777 February 22, 2009 10:09 PM PST
Let me tell you something, its people like Tribble Trouble as you see here that can't be trusted. I am all over the net looking at all of the sites that talk about the E-Cigarettes and this guy is at all the those sites constantly down playing all of these companies. I would even bet that he might very well be a highly paid Big Tobacco Plant constantly putting this product down and these companies that are trying to emerge to give people a healthier alternative. Let me tell you mister Tribble Trouble Mouth Full Of BS, I know quite a few people smoking the E-Cig from The Safe Cig and they are 30 year traditional smokers who would never go back to a real cigarette. Blow that in your face Trouble Master!!!!
by Harry1971 February 22, 2009 10:26 PM PST
I tend to agree with Unix....Lets see real cigarettes killed and kills...UMMMM MILLIONS.......E-Cigarettes killed and kills......UMMMMM.....ZERO.. Let me weigh my options, should I smoke real ones or the E-Cig and who do I really trust. People like thesafecig.com obviously are in it to make a profit but at the same time after reviewing the site and talking with the sales people they take pride in their products along with some other sellers of the E-Cig. Everyone has a free will and can smoke whatever they want but I will smoke something that makes sense......the E-Cig!!!
by mrsmed March 15, 2009 11:52 PM PDT
Hmmmm, let's assume that that Unix and Harry are just bots working for the so called "safe cigarette" companies... at worst, they are selling something that is better than what big tobacco is peddling. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but if big tobacco is not getting a piece of the pie then you know they are against it. They have withstood BILLIONS in lawyers fees and settlements.... and i don't see them going out of business left and right. Ask yourself this, with all the billions they've spent to promote/protect their industry, you don't think that they won't spend $10/hr for ~ONE~ guy to surf the interwebs all day making Trib-Trouble type accounts to poo-poo on anything that doesn't back big tobacco? I would be ashamed of them if they didn't have the foresight to do so.... Honestly, both of these D-bags that flamed Tribble sound kinda like ninja marketing reps, but one of my best friends got suckered into one of their stupid mall kiosks, and it works for her so that's good enough for me. I honestly hope that one the several companies that sell these e-cigs gets percieved as cool, so we can get away from the really bad stuff... the smokes I light up (and really enjoy btw) every day. Thas why i don't wanna quit!
by mxex February 17, 2009 3:18 PM PST
And just as correctly, there is no constitutional right to a smoke-free environment. "Non-smoker's rights" is just as mythical.
Reply to this comment
by MadLyb February 17, 2009 3:33 PM PST
It's not non-smoker's rights.

It is about being respectful of people around you. I don't want to smell this crap anymore than you want to smell me after I have been on a all day bike ride. Most smokers do not realize just how nasty this stuff smells to a non-smoker. The result is many non-smokers have become very militant on this topic and have pushed for the laws.
by Reaper0700 February 17, 2009 4:23 PM PST
The concept here is Liberty, You should be able to do what you want to as long as it doesn't infringe upon the right of other to do what they want to. Smokers want to smoke, Non-Smokers infringe upon there right to do so. Non-Smokers want a smoke free environment, Smokers infringe upon that. Where do you draw the line? Truth is, Smoking harms people, causes cancer, as does second hand smoke. So the Non-Smokers tend to win.

I think there that it should be a Business Decision. The state should say that in Public places, buildings, airplanes, what ever...sure; Non-Smokers win. But if a Bar or a Restaurant want a smoking section, or has no policy against smoking...its your choice to not go there if you don't want the smoke. Let Capitalism decide who wins the fight.

The Electric Cigarette is not a new thing at all and I'm surprised to see the recent spike in attention and interest. It could be due to recent tax increases (or pending at least) in tobacco products. A friend told me about a program Nova recently had on (find info on it here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/cigarette/nicotine_nfp.html) where they go over the history and effectiveness of the electric cigarette. I personally like to get all the info first before I go into a so called new product. I see there are lots of sites already sited but hell, Ill drop one more: http://Akovor.com

They have plenty of info and like the others, a good place to get the electric cigarette for less.

There really is not much more to it other than this is a device that takes the place of a real cigarette and eliminates most of the hazard associated with the real tobacco cigarette.

Britain's Royal College of Physicians endorses the use of smokeless tobacco (snus) as a quit-smoking mechanism, saying smokeless is 10-10,000 times safer than cigarettes, depending on the brand. Bottom line -- SwitchToSmokeless.com or SwitchToSnus.com!

As others above have stated, the electronic cigarette is no gimmick and offers smokers a 3rd way, where the choice previously was "quit or die".

you cannot smoke them on US airways. I am a flight attendant and we got a notice that it's a no go thing on the plane. Maybe because people who see you smoking an e-cigarette might not realize there is a difference. Stupid. Maybe the atomizer would set off the smoke alarms. I know hair spray and perfumes do set off the smoke alarms.

I certainly don't see why this product is so controversial and makes non-smokers so emotional. OK, it's true that everyone would be better off if they stopped smoking altogether. But, and this is what non-smokers and people who have successfully given up smoking don't seem to fully understand, for some of us giving up is a lot more difficult than for others. Surely for this group of people, to which I belong (believe me, I've tried EVERYTHING!), an electronic cigarette is of massive benefit. And to those around me too. I think we just have to be a bit more pragmatic about these issues.

So I'm fully supportive of these products, but I've found much cheaper, good quality ones at http://www.cannotstopsmoking.com . It's a UK based outfit and so the current exchange rat helps.

I only know of one company that seems legit because they run on all all volunteer crew and give 100% of thecompanies profits to fund a busy at risk youth center that was in danger of closing. They manage to be 50% to 75% off and it all goes to charity. Check them out at be-smoke-free .com

People criticizing this product either don't understand why smoking is harmful (hint: its not the nicotine) or just need to pass their superior judgement on others.
Non smokers have objections to second hand smoke, smell etc. This product removes these objections. Non smokers are still whining. What gives? once you remove the smoke inhalation and carcinogens, how is this any different than caffiene.
Should I judge you for your daily caffiene intake?

I am the occasional smoker and recently just found out about these e-cigarettes. I decided to buy some of the cigars for a bachelor party, and wow what a hit. We ended up being able to smoke them at the bars and other places albeit with a little explaining. I got mine at www.getruyanusa.com. They seem to be a legit place and I got them quick with no hassles. The vapor they produce smells like coffee and disipates quickly. I think these things will take off quick. As for any health concerns all of the chatter seems to point to RUYAN doing a lot of research to ensure safety.

About Inside CNET Labs Podcast

"Inside CNET Labs" has two meanings. First, this podcast takes you behind the scenes of CNET's editorial process from a performance testing perspective. It will demystify CNET's performance testing process, allowing the listener an inside look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of performance testing. The second meaning gets equal attention--and sometimes more so--as we go inside the heads of CNET's San Francisco Labs staff, Eric Franklin and Dong Ngo, who will have opinionated discussions on subjects ranging from the insecurities of people to whether the existence of time can be proven. This is the stuff they've talked about every day for several years. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for you, we hope), it's now being recorded.
