The 404 606: Mondays are the longest days of the year (podcast)
Today is the first day of summer, also known as the Summer Solstice, which also happens to be the longest day of the year, but everyone in the New York podcast studio this morning agrees that it's just way too hot to be outside right now.
If you're suffering, too, we recommend getting out of the sun to check out "Splice," a new sci-fi horror movie featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley.
Directed by Vincenzo Natali of "Cube" fame, "Splice" tells the twisted story of two overzealous genetic scientists who set out to create a new breed of human using DNA from various animals.
A New York Times review of the movie makes comparisons with David Cronenberg's 1986 film "The Fly," but our special guest Alli from Heavy and Flow sees the cautionary tale of genetic mutation as a combination of "Rosemary's Baby" and the "Species" series--you be the judge.
We've talked about the viral drinking game Bros Icing Bros on the show before, but Alli gets in the hot seat today to report news from the field, having spent the weekend in Montauk icing dudes left and right.
The actual Web site BrosIcingBros.com was recently taken down after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Smirnoff, which officially denounced the game, but that won't stop Alli from carrying around a case of the stuff to deflect any remaining players.
That better be Smirnoff, Alli.
She also tells us that icing is gaining popularity at our own CNET offices, but apparently we're too busy with iPhone news to get down on one knee and pound a Smirnoff.
iPhones across the world are getting a big software upgrade today, as Apple just released version 4.0 of the iOS operating system that gives users a whole new bag of tricks including multitasking, iBooks, and custom wallpapers just to name a few. The upgrade will work with limited features on existing iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS models, but it's really built for the iPhone 4, to be released this Thursday.
Retailers are warning of shortages, and early reports tell us folks are already standing in line to pick up their iPhone 4, so good luck!
