Blu-ray and HD DVD movies: Buy one, get one free

So you bit the high-def bullet and popped for a Blu-ray player--or an HD DVD player. Either way, it's time to start building your movie library.

Best Buy is currently offering buy-one-get-one-free deals on both Blu-ray and HD DVD movies. Free shipping, too!

What's the selection like? Better than you might expect. Available titles include 300, The Departed, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Ocean's Thirteen. (There are a couple turkeys, of course, like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Are We Done Yet?.) Interestingly, all the Blu-ray flicks sell for $29.99 or $34.99, while a couple of the HD DVDs are available for $19.99. That's not an endorsement of the format or anything, just an observation. Personally, I'm snagging 300 and Transformers--what better titles for showing off the glories of high-def DVD?

Why would anyone spend any money on HD-DVD? It is clearly loosing the battle with Blu-ray. Once the studios that support HD-DVD end their contracts they will certainly jump on Blu-ray, and its only a matter of time before that happens. The very best thing you could do is get a dual format player supporting both formats.

Blu-ray is the format to beat, but its not likely to happen.

I really think it could go either way at this point. HD is very popular among Xbox 360 users, for obvious reasons, and there's a lot more of them than there are PS3 users. But it continues to surprise me that things have dragged on this long, that more dual-format players haven't come out, that one camp or the other hasn't started selling $99 players, etc. It's like the two sides are determined to continue the lose-lose battle...

Quit being cranky because you paid $500 for that Blu-ray player and you only have movies released by 20th Century Fox and Disney to look forward do. Enjoy watching Superbad and High School Musical 2 in high def!!!
