What's new in the kitchen? We explored the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago in March to find out.

The trade show, which is closed to the public, is known as the largest of its kind, attracting store buyers from more than 100 countries.

Among the items attracting attention this year were a microwave and handheld espresso maker, both billed as the world's smallest. Eco-minded shoppers could find plenty of options for making the home a bit greener, and people with a sweet tooth could find contraptions for making doughnuts and gummy candies.

During the show, we covered gear targeting the germphobic, dieters, and sufferers of bad hair days, as well as plenty of energy-efficient, low-toxin appliances and products.

Another gadget we saw at the Housewares show was the Wrapmaster (http://www.wrapmasterusa.com): dispensers for plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Not high-tech by any means, but a very useful gadget to help in the kitchen. This way, you don't have to wrestle with the cardboard box and shoddy and dangerous cutting edge, as well as wipe it clean after every use to prevent cross-contamination. Say you're portioning pieces of chicken breast, you can use this to dispense and cut plastic wrap with one hand, and when you're done, you can wipe this plastic dispenser down or put in the top rack of the dishwasher.
They make dispensers for wrap and foil, and they fit in a drawer.
