Hot or not: Stainless Steel Flavor Infuser

I'm not sure what to think about the All-Clad Stainless Steel Flavor Infuser, which showed up in Williams-Sonoma's online fall catalog. fall On the one hand, genius: even if I have cheesecloth handy in my kitchen (a 50/50 proposition), I rarely have the patience to assemble and tie a proper bouquet garni. This gadget saves the trouble, letting you just drop your herbs into the 3-inch stainless steel mesh ball, latch it shut, and drop it in a soup or stew. The attached, 9-inch handle makes it easy to remove--not to mention lets you encourage infusion by stirring the herb sack through the broth.

On the other hand: $40. Despite my intense and sometimes irrational love for kitchen gadgets, I have to wonder whether the handle really adds much value to a mesh strainer that can be found elsewhere for one-tenth the price.

What say you, readers: Is this a genius invention or a waste of hard-earned money?

I use a tea ball on a chain for about $4. You hook the end of the chain over the end of the pot so it doesn't get lost, and you can sort of stir it around in there even though you are limited by the length of the chain. Mostly I use this once a year for cranberry sauce - I put the bay leaves and cloves in here. The $40 spoon thing is not worth it. Here's an example of the one I use: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RIZ7/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Just this week I noticed that several products from the All-Clad Gourmet Accessories line are now beginning to show up on T.J. Maxx store shelves. The Flavor Infusers are amazingly priced at only $14.99 (MSRP $30.00)! They appear to be first-quality with no noticeable defects whatsoever. More than likely, they are simply overstock. I bought an infuser for myself and was impressed by its overall quality, despite being made in China. As Michelle notes in the article above, you might certainly think twice about purchasing this utensil for $40... but at $14.99 I think it's entirely worth it!
