Monarchy, mercantilism, and Talmudic tech are on the table today. We get a little obscure in our references...at least I do...but Leo and Brian keep us on track talking about the new Sony Reader, and how the Pirate Bay is unkillable. In bad news, SCO is back, and this time it's personal.

Anonymous about AT&T spying on your phone.

E-MAIL
Buzz Crew,

I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?

By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.

Love the show.

Farhad's a bit overrated in my opinion, and I think you guys are missing the point of Android. Google doesn't really care about people wanting a Google phone, they just want mobile users using the Web and its search, even iPhone users.

The Pirate Bay can never die. The site itself may vanish but its legacy will live on.

So, should the "2 accusations and you're out" law pass in the UK, the first order of business is for every person who produces content to accuse their MP's family computer of infringement. I guarantee that when their teenaged children get their access pulled, there will be such a hue and cry that they'll call a special session to repeal the law.

Excellent idea. Also add high level execs in the media industry. If the gang from 4chan et alia all cry wolf enough, this will collapse under its own weight.

You guys said in episode 1047 that it was a prime number. You were wrong, but 1049 is one!

Kind of ironic that the day before, you mention on the show in relation to the Wikipedia experiment on living people, that Edward Kennedy wasn't dead and this morining he is....?

"Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus..." - Michael Crichton, A.B. Leo Laporte: "There is total consensus about global warming. There is no question about that". (BOL #1049)

I love you Leo, but you are wrong. As above, "consensus" in science is a fundamental oxymoron. Science is based upon provable facts, and the jury is still out on global warming. The facts are that the Earth has had warm and cool cycles for millions of years, proven from geological evidence. These warming and cooling cycles are going to continue. For humans to think that they have any control over planatary warming and cooling cycles is arrogance. Human made planatary warming is not a proven fact and not "scientific consensus".

I agree with most of what BOL hosts say, but sometimes some things remind me that you operate in the tech bubble. I don?t work in the tech world (being a student, I don?t work at all), and I suppose I?m half in and half out of the bubble.

Dumb phones aren?t going away any time soon. I have no desire to pay anything upwards of $10 per month for a phone, and an iPod Touch will be fine for me, as was a Palm before that. I would definitely get one if price were no option, but about all the adults I know wouldn?t. This is the generation that, when trying to find the answer to the age-old question, ?What does that button do?? is the one who looks for the manual and then, when they can?t find it, asks the nearest teenager or tech person. These people, who can?t figure out the buttons on their coffee maker, are in no rush to get a smartphone.

I also disagree with Microsoft for aiming OneApp at developing countries, for this reason and because of everyone who can?t afford either to pay for a smartphone or to buy their way out of their contracts. I would love to have this on my RAZR (it would be the only good thing about that damnable phone), if only it wasn?t supported. If it used dial-up technology on the phone line that would be even better, because due to the intricacies of our Verizion family plan, I (meaning my parents) have more minutes than I ever use in a month. To be fair, I usually use around five, so that?s not saying much. What I don?t have is a data plan.

Also, teens DO use Twitter. I cringe every time you say they don?t. That?s one of the reasons I don?t use many phone minutes. I?d guess it has about as much penetration in the teens I know than the adults I know.

Since I?ve already gone on so long: But for price, the borrowing books feature would have switched me from longing for a Kindle to longing for an eReader. Hooray for the Pirate Bay. I?m tired of tablet rumors, I don?t think one will be announced until 2010, so can we please get the iPod Touch 3G I?ve been saving up for? Also, terrible timing about Sen. Kennedy, and what the heck is SCO? Pretty much all you said was ?They?re suing Intel again,? then how much you hate them. Can we get some background for those who weren?t listeners back in 2007?

Thanks for everything you do, including Leo. I feel no hesitation in saying BOL is my favorite podcast, and you make cleaning up after dinner feel so much faster (although others have said you make it go so much slower).

Dangit, apparently something in this equation doesn't like unicode. Most of those ?s are smart quotation marks, and the L??? ??? s??? was supposed to be Love the show in small caps.
