Buzz Out Loud 790: Netflix, FIOS, and a boyfriend
Natali Del Conte joins us today for a discussion of whether it's more difficult, these days, to get FIOS installed, get a Netflix disc delivered, or find a decent man in New York. No, she's not taking applications. Also, confirmation of iPhone 3G issues which Molly, stunningly, has not experienced.

Remember the Netflix (NFLX) outage last week? Oddly enough it correlated with VMWare (VMW)'s issues with VMWare server ( http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=324544&intsrc=news_ts_head ). VMWare ESX Server, a utility used for server redundancy, and consolidation had issues Monday booting up due to anti-piracy, DRM technology. It affected all customers who had their clocks set correctly. Oddly enough, NFLX's problems started up on Monday too. I know in a large corporation it is difficult to roll out new versions of software, and in someone the size of NFLX's case it could take several days. Just Correlation? Causation? Maybe. Sargun
Not sure how much you picked up from NME but I shamelessly think this story is pretty sweet. My podcast Hak5, a show that's been blending underground hacking and mainstream IT since 2005, has been picked up by Revision3. PR: http://revision3.com/blog/2008/08/14/revision3-adds-hak5-program-to-hit-lineup/ Also my girlfriend Shannon (who will be premiering on Hak5 this season) and I are big BOL fans. We're such huge dorks that we synchronize our iPod Shuffles so that we can listen to you guys while jogging together. Wouldn't it be crazy if we heard you mention this while we were on the trail? Love the show, Darren the hacker from Virginia
We are writing from Melbourne, Australia – love the show. In the wake of Twitter shutting down SMS to anywhere outside the USA, Canada and India on August 14th – we were feeling disconnected here Down Under. So we’ve launched a site so the international Twitter community can get their SMS again. www.twitsms.co.uk <http:// <http:///> www.twitsms.co.uk/> and www.twitsms.com.au <http:// <http:///> www.twitsms.com.au/> has been launched for the UK, Australia and other parts of the globe. Twitsms gives a way for fans to keep getting their tweets via SMS, based on a 'user pays' system per message. We are spreading the word in the Twitter community and thought Buzztown international might like to hear about this too. Kind Regards, Delia Timms Co-Founder www.twitsms.com.au
Hi, I just discovered We7, a site that offers free ad-supported music downloads without any form of DRM. But that's not even the awesome part. Usually, people from small countries such as Belgium can't use these services because the record companies don't bother striking deals with them for such a tiny audience. It's not like that with We7. On August 14th, a staff member posted a message about the fact that Warner Music will join the download service "before the end of October". I'm definitely looking forward to that. - http://blogs.we7.com/weblog/2008/08/warner-music-uk-partners-with-we7.html Love the show! Pieter De Decker
Greetings Buzz Crew, I had the chance to actually see what Jason and Tom looked like in-person while I was roaming the floor at NME. In the open to episode 789, Tom said Las Vegas was in California. Now, I know there were a lot of California license plates in the area which might have been confusing. The parking garage at the Las Vegas Hilton was a prime example of that although I do wonder who has the California plate "PODKAST" that we saw. As a local, though, I can say that Las Vegas is not in California but is the population center of the state of Nevada. Clark County (where Henderson, Las Vegas, Boulder City, Laughlin, and more are found) is the most populous in the state. Was Tom looking at that cranky GPS Leo Laporte's tech crew were using when hauling the tricaster that sent them in a circle at one point? Thank you for the great work you do. My father had a great time finally putting faces to the voices he hears when I am listening to various podcasts. Didn't quite expect Tom and Jason to be so frakking tall, though. See ya next confab! Love the show. Stephen

Molly Wood engages in
ruthless industry analysis in the form of the Daily Buzz, the Buzz
Report video, and, of course, Buzz Out Loud.
Tom Merritt appears on
CNET TV, specializing in help and how-to and the ever popular Top 5
lists. He also co-hosts CNET's The Real Deal podcast.
Jason Howell can
often be found producing Buzz Out Loud from the audio studios at CNET,
updating XML feeds from the comfort of his cubicle, and saying "uh-oh"
from time to time.
THought you might like to know that Verizon are still up to their old tricks. Last month I bought an iphone and terminated my Verizon contract 2 months before it's end - today I got a termination fee from them for $175 ! I called them and they said that I took out my contract before they introduced the pro-rated contracts!. I mentioned the recent court settlement and suddenly I got a $110 rebate! You have to watch 'em! Since I was on a family plan with my wife they also decided to cancel the plan and not tell us so they charged my wife 45c for every call made this last month! They said they tried calling us but didn't leave a message, very useful! Needless to say I got that refunded too :-)
Hate the show (everybody says love the show so I thought i'd be different!)

The music royalty/ car dealer analogy was very bad. When a car salesman ask you what do you do for a living and if you have a wife and kids, they are trying to see how much money they can milk out of you. They don't care about your family life.
good thing I checked tonight, otherwise would be very upset without my BOL fix for the day tomorrow.

I think we should give Jason a get out of firing free card to prevent future snafus like this (though we appreciate all Tom's efforts in Jason's absence)
I've been listening to BOL for a long time and truly love the show. I wish you would put more care into the sound. When you do the video show I still hear times when I can hear keyboard clicks and breathing that can be annoyingly loud.
