The death of Whitney Houston in February led to Google's top search for 2012.

Looking at the world's most popular searches for the year, Google's Zeitgeist 2012 uncovered a variety of people, events, and even a couple of tech products.

In second place behind Houston was music video phenom Gangnam Style. Hurricane Sandy took third place, followed by the iPad 3, Diablo 3, Kate Middleton, the 2012 Olympics, Amanda Todd, Michael Clarke Duncan, and BBB12.

The list also drilled down to the top searches among specific categories, including people, movies, TV shows, and consumer electronics.

Google's annual Zeitgeist roundup of the hottest trends in search from 2011 is out, and when it comes to tech, Apple dominates the list.

In Google's top 10 list of fastest-rising technology searches for the United States, the top six are all Apple-related, led by "iCloud," "Osx Lion" and "Ipad 2." "Steve Jobs" also makes the list at No. 8.

Google fared a little better on its own overall global top 10 list, with "Google+" snagging the No. 2 spot. A mobile phone that never materialized and the late co-founder of Apple found their way onto the list of the 10 most popular searches at Google this past year.

Revealing the hottest and fastest-growing search terms for 2011, Google found a number of tech-related items in the Top 10.

The company's own Google+ social network took second place, just behind American pop singer Rebecca Black. Battlefield 3, a new first-person combat game from the folks at Electronic Arts, was the fifth most popular search term.

Despite antitrust investigations and growing competition, Google CEO Larry Page sees the company itself as its biggest obstacle to success.

During an appearance today at Google's Zeitgeist conference in Paradise Valley, Ariz., Page was asked what he felt the biggest threat was to Google's success. His answer was a loud "Google."

The Golden Globe nominations were released this morning, and though "The King's Speech" received the most nominations, "The Social Network" was also honored for Best Picture--Drama, Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Supporting Actor (Andrew Garfield), Best Director (David Fincher), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), and Best Original Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). We saw the movie when it first came out, but CNET's social-media reporter Caroline McCarthy knows much more about the film, so we're psyched to have her on the show today!

Caroline and Jeff are both addicted to TV shows like "Boardwalk Empire," "30 Rock," and "Mad Men," which share Best TV nominations for a drama, musical, or comedy, but the three of us are confused about the appearance of "The Walking Dead," a show that the Internet seems to collectively hate for its departure from the original graphic-novel storyline.

Along with the rest of the discoveries in Zeitgeist 2010, Google has also shared the "fastest-falling" list of searches in 2010. In other words, these are the search terms that enjoyed popularity in 2009 but failed to keep up the momentum this year.

The list includes swine flu, Circuit City, Myspace Layouts, and Michael Jackson, despite the release of a new album in December.

Check out this graphic of the world according to Facebook. Facebook intern Paul Butler wondered how to show an accurate representation of Facebook's popularity across the globe, and his idea to visualize Facebook "Internet" friendships on a map actually shows the extent of real human relationships.

Interestingly enough, the picture reveals that even Argentina, Southeast Asia, and South Africa have a strong Facebook presence, while a significant portion of China and Russia are missing due to Web censorship.

Girls geeks are uniting in support of a young Star Wars fan who was bullied by classmates after choosing a Star Wars water bottle and matching backpack for school. Her mom wrote a heartfelt blog asking female Star Wars fans to send messages and comments to show Katie that plenty of women appreciate Star Wars, and within days the post received more than 1,000 messages of support.

With all the attention on bullying these days, both online and in person, it's important to remind young people that it's great to be different...and that nerds make more money.

The new year is coming up, which means everyone here at CNET is gearing up for CES 2011, including our laptop editor Scott Stein, who joins us to chat about what to expect at next year's biggest technology trade show.

Perhaps the most anticipated event for us at CES 2011 is all the gambling we plan to do in order to make up for last year's financial losses. Google has released its own year end wrap-up for most popular search terms for 2010 in an report called Google Zeitgeist. Turns out that ChatRoulette, the Web site that paired strangers together in a random video chat, was the fastest rising term of 2010, beating out the Apple iPad and Justin Bieber that took second and third place.

Conversely, many search engines fell from popularity since last year, and Google reveals that "swine flu" was the fastest falling search term around the world this year, followed by the bank Washington Mutual and tween favorite Twilight:New Moon. And Michael Jackson, last year's top search query, dropped to the ninth spot in Google's list of falling results.

Google also reveals bizarre sentences queried in 2010 that question if a horse can have OCD, why you can't stand on the sun's surface, and whether or not ninjas are better than pirates.

Protesters in the UK attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and his wife Camilla yesterday, and CNN was on the scene to cover the security breach, but check out this video of a messy programming error halfway through the broadcast.

Someone at the station must have queued the infamous bathroom scene from Dumb & Dumber for another segment, because even the news anchor is surprised at the display and promises to edit out the hilarious mistake from the final broadcast. That being said, expect the video for today's episode to feature many, many cuts to said clip.
