A hail and farewell to AltaVista

This is what happens after a series of bumbling owners fail to keep a once terrific product relevant in a dynamic market: You get a cold PR send-off that doesn't even fill the screen.

"Please visit Yahoo! Search for all of your searching needs."

That's all Yahoo wrote Friday afternoon as it lumped in the news that it was killing off AltaVista on July 8 with word that it will also ax 11 other products that no longer matter to the company.

Jay Rossiter, the vice president in charge of platforms, said the moves will free … Read more

Yahoo integrates Flickr with e-mail, adds new search alerts

Continuing to spruce up its offerings, Yahoo on Friday added Flickr integration into its e-mail service and notifications for Yahoo search results for images and video.

Adding Flickr, the popular photo-sharing service acquired by Yahoo, to e-mail means it will be easier for users to send individual photos and sets from their Flickr accounts, according to a blog post from Yahoo. Just click on the arrow next to the paperclip and choose "Share from Flickr," to access the feature.

For Yahoo search, users can now set up alerts for keywords for a Web, video, or image search. Yahoo … Read more

Google reigns in search for September while Yahoo falls off

Surprise, surprise, Google is still the king of search in the U.S. In fact, any other search engine pales in user numbers comparison.

According to new data released by digital analytics company ComScore today, 66.7 percent of users core searches in September were on Google, which is 0.3 percent higher than August. Trailing behind were Microsoft's search engines, which got 15.9 percent of the market share, and Yahoo came in third with 12.2 percent -- which is down 0.6 percent from August.

Over the last year, Yahoo's share has been in a steady free-fall. … Read more

Yahoo unveils its answer to Google Instant search

Yahoo today announced upgrades to its search product that bring up search results in real-time as a query is typed, much like the "Google Instant" technology launched last year. Called "Search Direct," Yahoo says this still-in-beta service will provide "a fast, simple search experience that goes beyond a list of blue links."

Highlighted in Yahoo Search Direct are results beyond the hyperlink, with its ability to detect queries related to movies, television, local information, and trending news topics.

"With today's launch, direct answers--not the search results page--is the primary focus. We are … Read more

Firefox add-on blocks malicious search results

In their never-ending quest to steal your credit card and bank account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive personal information, malware purveyors go wherever the eyeballs are. Lately, the bad guys have increasingly been targeting the links served up by Web search engines.

Two computer security firms recently issued press releases touting the dangers of searching for popular terms, such as the names of starlets or items in the news. Barracuda Labs' 2010 Midyear Security Report highlights the risks of entering a popular topic in Google, Bing, or Yahoo. The company entered thousands of search terms in these … Read more

Yahoo struggles to gain search respect

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--The Rodney Dangerfield of search engines is starting to get a little annoyed about its plight.

Yahoo hosted a search event at its headquarters Wednesday that seemed designed mainly to remind the Silicon Valley press that it is still working on Internet search. A few new projects were shown off, such as an interesting mobile search feature that lets you draw a circle around an area of a map to narrow search results called Sketch-a-search.

But the vast majority of the morning's event--led by new search chief Shashi Seth--was a reiteration of Yahoo's strategy for organizing "a Web of things"Read more

Microsoft's Mehdi on financial impact of Yahoo deal

Although Microsoft and Yahoo have only just inked their final search deal and still need regulatory approval, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi talked on Tuesday about the economics that the deal will bring.

Speaking at a Credit Suisse technology investor conference in Arizona, Mehdi said that both Microsoft and Yahoo should see a double-digit increase in revenue per search, once the two companies have a single paid search system.

Putting their two separate paid search systems together will take longer than just setting up Yahoo to use Bing's algorithmic search.

"That is going to take some time," Mehdi … Read more

Yahoo ponders the meaning of search

There's perhaps no better way to shift attention from your failings in one era to proclaim the start of a brand-new, totally different era.

Yahoo is in the midst of a grand transition as a company, with a pending deal to sell its search assets to Microsoft in exchange for a healthy portion of the revenue generated by searches on Yahoo's pages. Yet some in the company seem a bit perturbed by talk that it's giving up on the search market.

"With all of the events that Yahoo has gone through in the last several months, … Read more
