Order a living 'Game of Thrones' dire wolf (almost)

Before "Game of Thrones" became a pop culture phenomenon, pretty much the only people thinking about dire wolves were historians and paleontologists. Canus dirus means "fearsome dog." The massive wolfy creatures are long extinct, but they've gained a new popularity through the "Game of Thrones" books and television show.

Fans can already get a Hand of the King replica pin, a replica Iron Throne, and even a "Game of Thrones" beer, but they haven't been able to get a dire wolf. That could change soon. The Dire Wolf Project has quietly been in the works since 1987.… Read more

'Game of Thrones' chair made from melted keyboards

Take "Game of Thrones." Stir in a high level of geekiness. Add a dash of Salvador Dali. Mix well. Apply heat. Congratulations, your name is Mike DeWolfe and you've just created the Throne of Nerds.

The Throne of Nerds is a full-size replica of the Iron Throne from "Game of Thrones," but with one important difference. Instead of being forged from the swords of his fallen enemies, DeWolfe sculpted the beast from the keyboards of his fallen enemies. All the keys and hard plastic make it look just marginally more comfortable than the pointy metal version it's modeled after.… Read more

My favorite game this year just got a major update

Ski Safari (99 cents) challenges you to swoosh down a powdery mountain to avoid an avalanche, with animal friends and other vehicles along the way to help you with your escape. This distance game quickly became my go-to time-waster on both my iPhone and iPad, so when an update was announced last week, you can bet I was at the App Store immediately. The update adds a new mountain you can choose for your run, a new animal to help you along your way, and added achievements to keep you coming back for more.… Read more

The 404 1,034: Where Jeff takes an ice nap (podcast)

Jeff took a spill on the ice during a hockey game yesterday, but he manages to limp his way into the studio to help us out with today's rundown. We wouldn't be The 404 if we didn't cover the 2Pac holographic concert at Coachella last weekend, and even though it's technically just a clever optical illusion, we're excited about the upcoming 2.0Pac tour and the potential of resurrecting our own favorite performers from history.

Meanwhile, Ikea furniture designers in Sweden have come up with a new way to vertically integrate their furniture with another … Read more

The heavy-metal-speaker man

I interviewed Magico's Alon Wolf a few months ago when he visited his NYC dealer, EarsNova.

Like so many audio entrepreneurs I've talked with over the years, Wolf had started building speakers for himself years before he officially got into the business in 2005. Mastering engineer Paul Stubblebine was one of Wolf's first customers; he heard something in a Wolf speaker he couldn't get anywhere else.

Wolf was only interested in building the very best speakers he could without cost constraints, and that's his market niche. Thing is, it's also the most demanding market, … Read more

Four and a half feet of grill

It has been a long, cold winter across much of the country, one where it's going to take going the extra mile to heat up when it's all over. Or, in the case of outdoor grills, an extra couple of feet. The massive new Wolf 54-Inch Outdoor Gas Grill should be up to the task. Featuring five stainless-steel burners capable of outputting 51,000 BTU, the large, built-in gas grill provides ample grilling room and strength to match.

While four and a half feet of grilling room is a nice vacation from cramped and cold quarters, it's … Read more

And now: Teen Wolf on a gas-powered skateboard

It's Friday afternoon, and I could be writing about more iPad 2 or iPhone 5 rumors, or Star Wars coming to Blu-ray finally, or new 3D TVs.

But it's Friday. So instead, I'm bringing you a first look at a guy in a Teen Wolf costume walking his dog around a kickball field in Seattle on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-style gas-powered two-wheeled skateboard.… Read more

New bacteria redefines 'life as we know it'

NASA scientists have discovered a new type of bacteria that is able to substitute arsenic--a poison to most living creatures--as a biological building block, something no other known life form on Earth can do, the agency said today.

In a press conference held at NASA's Washington D.C. headquarters, scientists announced that they had discovered a new form of bacteria, known as GFAJ-1, in California's Mono Lake that has DNA completely foreign to anything ever before found on Earth. It has the ability to substitute arsenic at the DNA level for phosphorus.

That would distinguish it from every … Read more
