Navigon to separate app and maps, support WM7

If you own a full-feature turn-by-turn mobile navigation app, you must know by now what a pain it is each time there's an update. This is because the updates, made up of both maps and the app itself, tend to be in gigabytes and therefore take hours to download via a normal broadband connection.

That's now going to change with the major update Navigon is releasing for its navigation apps for iOS and Android this fall. In Navigon 2.0, the company is changing the way updating works by separating the app and the maps. This means you can update the app, which is just about a few megabytes, or the maps independently.

Furthermore, maps are divided into different portions and you can just download those of areas you travel in, via a feature called MyMaps.

For example, if you live in California, you'll just need to use MyMaps within the app to download and keep maps of this state on your mobile device, instead of having to download maps of all 50 states and Canada the way you currently would. This way, the download will be just a few hundred megabytes at most, instead of a few gigabytes.

In addition to this, Navigon is introducing FreshMaps, an in-app purchase feature that offers quarterly updated maps. Those who don't want to opt for this feature can still use the old maps that are included with the app indefinitely.… Read more

Viewsonic VX2450wm-LED review: Or, why a sub-$200 price point garners interest

It's a great feeling when you can get a capable device at a not-so-capable-seeming price. The ViewSonic VX2450wm-LED is one of the most popular monitors on CNET, and though ViewSonic is a solid monitor company, much of that interest stems from the fact that it's offering a 24-inch display for less than $200.

For someone looking for a by-the-numbers display, a cheap monitor from a known vendor with a nice-sized screen is hard to pass up. But does the ViewSonic VX2450wm-LED offer more than that?

Judging from some internal numbers I've seen, $200 dollars seems to be … Read more

ViewSonic intros monitor with 1ms response time

I've been playing video games most of my life and I've been reviewing monitor for a few years now, but  I still have trouble noticing a difference between a 2ms response time and a 5ms response time when gaming. Actually, to be honest, I do not see a difference, which is not surprising given recent findings.

On Thursday, ViewSonic sought to challenge my eyes further when it announced its VX2739wm. According to ViewSonic, the VX2739wm is the world's first 27-inch "Full HD" monitor with a 1ms response time. According to the company, the display … Read more

ViewSonic makes second foray into 3D

LAS VEGAS--Last year, I reviewed two 3D monitors: the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ and the ViewSonic FuHzion VX2265wm. While the ViewSonic monitor delivered a 3D experience comparative with the Samsung, its overall worse performance and lack of an onscreen display meant that, pound for pound, it just wasn't worth the investment.

At CES 2010, the company announced it's trying 3D again with the debut of the 23.6-inch V3D241wm-LED monitor. This time, the monitor had a 16:9 aspect ratio with a 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution--up from the 1,680x1,050-pixel resolution of the FuHzion VX2265wm.

The V3D241wm has … Read more

NEC's first LED monitor looks familiar

LED is definitely the new black in the world of computer monitors. Most vendors have gotten behind the technology and many more are beginning to announce LED-based products. Check out my list of the five best LED monitors, and see what the current top-rated models are.

NEC is the latest vendor to drop its hat into the mix. On Wednesday, it announced the MultiSync EA222WMe, the company's first LED monitor.

Aesthetically, judging just by the picture, the monitor resembles the previously reviewed NEC MultiSync EA221WM.

Like the EA221WM, the EA222WMe has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen, 1,680x1,… Read more
