Harsh: Windows Mobile still more popular than Windows Phone

The headline out of the latest smartphone market share numbers from Nielsen is that Android now operates 51 percent of smartphones in the U.S., but the punchline is that Windows Mobile still holds twice as much market share as its far more attractive successor, Windows Phone.

Ouch. That's the statistical equivalent of American consumers giving Steve Ballmer an atomic wedgie.

Windows Mobile, which used the Windows CE "Pocket PC" kernel, basically sought to jam the Windows desktop into a phone and never gained too much traction or acclaim. Yet somehow, following in the grand tradition of … Read more

Apple products are mostly used by younger generations, but the company should still recognize the dangers of "high-tech modern architecture." Microsoft: It's time to move on from Windows Mobile

There comes a point in every corporation's life when it's time to usher on steadfast loyalists into the brave new world of next-generation products. For Microsoft and Windows Mobile, that time is now.

On May 9, Microsoft will be closing down, boarding up, and never looking back on its Windows Marketplace for Mobile, an app store it launched in 2009 for Windows Mobile 6.5, the last iteration of its Windows Mobile OS.

The message to hangers-on is clear: Windows Phone Marketplace and the Windows Phone OS overhaul are Microsoft's OS future now--and there's no going back.… Read more

RIP, Dashwire, you mobile phone dashboard, you

I was speed-walking out from the press room at a crowded CTIA 2007, when I heard a voice shout my name.

It was Ford Davidson, the founder and CEO behind Dashwire, a brand-new Seattle-based startup, jogging after me. I was exhausted and overwhelmed from a day of mobile app pitches and ready to shuck off my heavy backpack and close out the day.

Instead, Davidson persuaded me to stall 10 minutes, and there, squatting on the tamped-down carpet of San Francisco's Moscone Center, he showed me one of the most useful and original apps I'd seen that show.… Read more

With Apple and Android vying for the top spot, other … Read more
