Sprint adds four markets to its slow-growing LTE network

Sprint today announced that it has launched LTE service in four new markets across four states. Bringing the total number of major markets to six, Sprint's new 4G technology arrives in Baltimore, the site where the carrier first deployed its WiMax (Xohm) service nearly four years ago.

Acknowledging that it put its eggs in the wrong basket, Sprint has had to start anew with an LTE build-out.

In addition to Baltimore, the carrier now offers LTE in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Mo., and San Antonio.

Unofficially, customers in the San Francisco Bay Area are seeing 4G speeds as … Read more

Clearwire prepping $300M stock offering

Clearwire is on its way to shoring up its coffers.

The mobile broadband provider and wholesaler said it is planning a public stock offering of $300 million. It's unclear how many shareholders are willing to re-up on a stock that has fallen 60 percent this year.

The funds are critical to Clearwire's continued ability to operate and upgrade its existing WiMax network to a newer technology called LTE. Last week, Sprint Nextel swooped in and saved the company by committing up to $1.6 billion in financing. Sprint, along with being the majority shareholder, is also Clearwire's … Read more

Clearwire stock may be worth $1, analyst says

It's not a good time to be a Clearwire investor, according to Morgan Stanley.

The 4G wireless provider faces several problems, the investment firm says, including the need to obtain further funding, a rapidly vanishing lead in the 4G race, and the potential of a Sprint iPhone. Such a device would run on a competing network and cut into sales of other smartphones at Sprint--Clearwire's largest source of wholesale customers.

With all of these issues, Morgan Stanley says, the base case value of the company is $1 a share--or less than a third of its current stock price … Read more

The WiMax 2 high-speed wireless technology, which is expected to boost download speeds for mobile devices, is set to become a standard by early next year, according to an industry group.

On Monday, the WiMax Forum said that 802.16m, the key technology within WiMax 2, is expected to be standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in November. Formal approval by the IEEE Standards Association is scheduled for the first quarter of 2011, with device certification coming in late 2011.

The 802.16m update should help WiMax 2 deliver download speeds of up to 120Mbps and … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1292: You're a Koobface (podcast)

Happy 15th birthday to Internet Explorer and AT&T says Net neutrality is indeed onerous and it's all for Verizon and Google's proposal (um, duh). The Facebook "dislike" button finally launches, but it's a scam; WiFi-sniffing aerial drones are the new black, and we celebrate 50 years of broadcasting to the world the following: "looking for a good planet to plunder? Call Earth."

Sprint CEO sees 'logic' in merger with T-Mobile

A future technology shift at Sprint Nextel could pave the way toward a merger between the third-and fourth-largest U.S. wireless companies, the Financial Times suggests in an article published Tuesday.

According to the FT report, Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse told the news agency that he sees "logic" in a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile USA, if the two companies were using the same 4G technology. He declined to comment further on merger talks. And Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermannhas ruled out any "multibillion" euro deals this year. Deutsche Telekom owns T-Mobile USA.

Verizon to fulfill 4G promise to rural Americans?

Verizon Wireless could make good on its promise to get 4G wireless broadband to rural America.

The nation's largest wireless provider is in talks with rural wireless operators to expand its 4G network to consumers in hard to reach areas of the country, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Verizon is building its next-generation wireless network using $4.7 billion worth of spectrum it acquired in the Federal Communication Commission's 700MHz auction in 2008. Using a technology called Long Term Evolution, or LTE, the carrier hopes to be in 25 to 30 markets by the end of this … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1222: Nobody backs the FCC into a corner (podcast)

When backed into a corner, the FCC acts less like a bear and more like a kitten ... which is probably a good thing for the Internet overall. Facebook takes another lump, the HTC Evo shows up for pre-order at The Shack at all places, and Google Chrome is faster than a potato. Well, French fries, to be really accurate.

Clearwire expands 4G but major cities still left out

People living in some of the nation's biggest cities in the U.S. will have to wait a little longer to get 4G wireless broadband service from providers using the new Clearwire network.

Clearwire, which is building a nationwide 4G wireless network using a technology called WiMax, announced Wednesday that it will be adding 18 additional cities to the list of markets getting the speedy wireless service this summer. But major cities, such as New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. will still have to wait.

Previously, the company said it would offer 4G service starting this summer … Read more

Sprint hosting EVO 4G-related event next month

Sprint has been busy sending out invitations to an exclusive event next month in New York, which will put its new HTC EVO 4G front and center and will feature remarks from Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse.

It's hard for me to imagine the carrier sending out invitations specifically referencing the phone if it didn't plan to advance the conversation, especially as we get closer to the "summer" release time frame mentioned by Sprint as this year's CTIA unveiling.

As I've mentioned here before, the rumored release dates for the Evo 4G are June 6 … Read more
